This makes sense, considering Love Magic is what Chrysalis used to best Celestia (who is implied to be stronger that Chrysalis in a straight fight) and what Cadance used to best Chrysalis and an entire changeling army.

It was only stated that ponies “USE” magic which is relevant to their cutie marks. It’s quite possible that Twilight meant most ponies don’t bother to learn more magic than is relevant to them.

It’s been said before that the magical ability of a unicorn is based off their special talent, so while many different ponies/magical beings may have their magic based off of emotion, it’s not everyone. The way she said it during the episode made me think that she was describing her own magic, not unicorn magic in general.

Celestia’s spirit burns so hot that it can command the sun itself.

I think this only applies to Starlight, and her talent is dark magic. Hence the emotional connection.

It’s not just Twilight. Changelings feed on love - only way they could get energy from that, is magic. The Sirens feed on anger - The only way they could get energy from that is magic.

Maybe she is? The magic of friendship, for instance. She only started really getting powerful when she went to Ponyville. Maybe she uses happiness, alternatively? Or anxiety.

…Point taken. I still lean towards theories that state all magic stems from emotions, at least.

Yet again, magic being tied to emotion seems to only be limited to Starlight. Magical ability varies among ponies, maybe this is a trait unique to her for some reason.

Unlikely. For it to be a mutation… It dun work like that. We already know friendship is magic, and some beings feed on emotions. It’s basically a given that emotions = magic

Starlight says she prefers being mercurial and unhinged.
