Well, compared to Gen1 through to Gen 3.5, FiM is a masterpiece. Nay, a national epic!  
Still, I wonder if Faust cringes every time she sees a new episode air, seeing what her vision has become…

Comics deserve a whole lower level of respect compared to the books.
 
And yeah, kids show, but I still remember when that wasn’t an excuse not to plan things out competently, like other shows I could mention. But I guess, no matter how good it was and threatens to be, it was only ever going to a commercial.

Godawful second season… Discord, Changelings and out-of-nowhere siblings and foalsitters…  
Yes, it was quite awful.
 
As for EQG… the spinoff is quite annoying as it’s basically a completely new show,  
with similar, humanized designs which liberally borrows elements from the main series…  
Imho, yes, the show is quite convoluted, but spinoffs like EQG are just the result of HasNObro marketing.

Like the comics? They’re quite a source for unofficial official canon…  
As for the show… it all comes back to the fact that it’s just a kids show, created to advertise pony merchandise… no matter how I wish it was more well thought out. Just imagine… if MLP had worldbuilding on the level of Avatar: The Last Airbender (show, not movie).

And is the EG series really better at explaining anything? I never got that feeling myself.

I wish the show would try and answer those questions. Hell, the EQG series is a million times better at that than the show proper, even as the show has gotten better at explaining shit since the godawful second season.

Moreover, how did they end up with responsibility (with cutie marks and all!) over day and night? The first Hearth’s Warming episode seems to establish a time before the alicorn sisters where unicorns controlled the heavens. Is it not a coincidence that Equestria has monarchs whom are neither unicorn or pegasus but both (earth ponies are crap)?
 
With such a long time frame (1000+ years) there’s a great deal which could be imagined.

Uh source? We know that Celestia and Luna live forev- a very long time, but nothing in the narrative suggests that ‘alicorns’ live forever.
 
Speaking of which: Where the hell did Celestia and Luna come from? It was implied that ‘alicorns’ are made, not born, thus it begs the question of where the original two princesses came from. Were they disciples of Starswirl? Test subjects, maybe. Or maybe they were disciples and/or test subjects of Starswirl’s precursor.
 
The possibilities are…intriguing
