Oh for the love of-csn we just be happy that Spike is getting some respect and isn’t just the butt monkey of the show anymore and leave it at that!?
I’m merely stating it the way it is. Spike getting kudos for saving the crystal empire prior to equestria games makes no sense. Cadance did vastly more, even in front of the normally airheaded crystal ponies. Why is she not mobbed? Why is Cadance giving the kudos to Spike?
As it stands from what the episode shows, it’s more like her taking pity on the kid who did nothing and playing up what he did to extremes.
I honestly believe equestria games was quite literally just 23 minutes and 30 seconds of nonsense before using the last 30 seconds to give an ACTUAL reason for Spike to be the “hero of the crystal empire” because he really didn’t deserve it from the two parter anymore than the mane 6, cadance, and armor.
If you want I can address each one of those points in detail, though effectively I would be responding with hypothetical arguments and meta-anyalisis of narrative structure.
I’m kind of getting the feeling that either you just want to be upset about this, or that you’re just going to keep being upset until everyone gets a statue in the show.
Please let me know if I’m wrong here, as I would like to continue discussing this if that’s the case. Otherwise though I would rather not waste my time with this anymore if I’m being quite honest with you.
Cadance is the LEADING MEMBER OF HIS FANCLUB. isn’t she the one parading around “Spike the brave and glorious”? isn’t she the one that approved of the giant statue of Spike?
Spike had the heart thrown at him, he grabbed it and fell. Cadance was thrown by Armor and caught him and the heart, of which Spike was far from a position to be defending and, at best, was baggage that needed to be caught with said heart.
Where is Armor’s statue? Where is Cadance’s statue? Wasn’t she the one who set the heart where it belonged and firmly declared herself the Crystal Princess and destroyed Sombra?
Spike still doesn’t have any reason for any of that to be attributed as his actions of being THE hero of the empire.
He’s the one who has the statue, he’s the one who has the fan mobs. Where is Twilight’s statue? How did everyone else get ignored but the credit got thrown to Spike?
He was simply NOT “the great savior of the crystal empire” until he saved the stadium from the massive idiotball MUCH later on. From THEN on, ok, yeah, I’m fine with him being called the hero, but he WASN’T until that point.
This is Spike now.
They saw him come out with the Crystal Heart when they thought that all hope was lost and that they were going to be enslaved to Sombra again. They also saw him trying his best to climb down the castle and return it to it’s rightful place before it was too late, despite the fact that he was a small flightless dragon at on an unstable platform at a height where a fall would surely kill him.
Saying that all they saw was him falling off the castle is at best a gross oversimplification and at worst a blatant falsehood.
As for why Cadance doesn’t get any credit, how do you know she doesn’t? We don’t see Cadance interact with the Crystal Ponies very much and they seem to hold nothing but reverence for her when they do. I imagine the main reason that we don’t see Ponies mobbing her about it is because it would be quite tedious for her since she actually lives in the Crystal Empire full time. I would also be quite surprised if she didn’t have at least one statue dedicated to her, though of course we wouldn’t see it because it wouldn’t really be relevant to the plot in the same way that a statue dedicated to Spike is.
I’m not saying he’s useless, I’m saying that in that episode, ALL the crystal ponies saw, was him falling off of the castle and Cadance catching him. Why doesn’t Cadance have a statue of herself considering the acts that Cadance was performing consisted of the love shield around the city before said catch?
Subjectively that can be argued for any act of heroism.
I would personally recommend re-watching the episodes and thinking of it from the Crystal Ponys’ perspective. Consider that specifically what they saw. Even considering everything else involved, I think you might be downplaying his involvement a bit.
I’m not saying anything from Equestria games ONWARD isn’t warranted, I’m just talking about the defeat of Sombra. Before EG, there really was no reason for him to be praised the way he was by the crystal ponies.

Personally I think that Spike’s treatment regarding his accomplishments has been perfectly fair, if not a little overblown at times by the residents of The Crystal Empire. Then again, they seem to have a habit of overblowing things quite a bit, so that’s not surprising in context.
Well he’s done enough to earn that praise. Pluse, they gave Cadence the THRONE, what Spike got was the equivalent of a “thank you for helping” in comparison.

His first act as a hero solo that “saved a bunch of ponies” was melting the glacier formed of condensed pony stupidity at the end of Equestria Games. Since THAT was in the crystal empire, ok, fine, say he’s the hero of the crystal empire, it at least makes sense, but the praising prior to that makes NO sense, especially with CADANCE at the forefront of embellishing it! She was there doing MOST of the work keeping Sombra away while everyone else tried to keep things together.
Yes he’s done grand things SINCE then; saved the stadium of ponies, prevented Garble from becoming Dragon Lord, risked all of that fame and glory to prove Thorax was kind (on the basis that “Thorax knew the REAL him”… that’s something special that he doesn’t even say about his normal friends), but BEFORE all that, he was just another cog in the machine, and not even that great of one, and certainly not one that deserved the praise he got.
After all the crap he’s had to go through and the previous Seasons? I’d say his praise is well deserved.
To be fair, that’s something he calls out himself in the series.
Spike is overpraised in the series. It posses me off that he gets all the credit for saving the Crystal Empire when many others were vital in stopping Sombra.
I’m not denying that Spike wasn’t worthwhile in the defeat of Sombra, but that he gets a statue and is called the hero of the crystal empire? Him helping Twilight was inside the castle and no one but twilight saw it, and the one thing they did see was him fall off the castle and get caught by cadance.
Why isn’t it a statue of Cadance for her love shield keeping sombra away for so long and even being the one who caught Spike? I really don’t get it.
1: Actually it does:
If he didn’t go with her they never would’ve gotten to the heart, Twilight technically got trapped first. Spike walking into it was more of a testing of said trap. Him saving Twilight held more weight because her progress had been severally hindered.
Also he gave Twilight the hint need to get through the starway trap.
Again, if he wasn’t there Sombra would’ve WON. Twilight couldn’t teleport out of the next trap and Sombra was inches away from the castle. He kept the heart safe long enough, and it’s very sight and presence gave Cadence the drive she needed to catch him and the Crystal Ponies the motivation to fight back against Sombra.
Plus they built a statue of him as a “thank you” and practically worship him whenever he’s there, I’d say THEY count it as well.
That one is interesting. According to Spike, humdrum is completely useless and only hinders the heroes severely, yet he managed to basically save the day. I supposed technically, he was fighting with quite the handicap and STILL prevailed.
#1 doesn’t count. That was a group effort and Spike was did nothing that warranted being called a hero in the public eye.
