We still aren’t aware of what actually happened, though. For all we know, the EQD reporters could have snapped the photos while the floor staff was momentarily distracted with someone or something else. At this point, we can’t write off anything, including those assistants manning the displays.

I never had a problem with this specific post; this is the type of consequence Hasbro has to endure for the mistake they made. What I do disagree with, however, is classifying Hasbro’s take down of the original source as censorship. They are still within their rights to stop the publicizing of a product that was only displayed at a private event and never meant to reach the public eye. As for the content itself, I don’t think a cheap karaoke machine would have garnered all much attention nor would its removal have left a lot of people “suffering”, considering everything else that was released and reported on at the Toy Fair, including but certain not limited to: the entire seapony toyline, the most advanced Twilight robot they’ve created yet, and significant news about season 7.

Hasbro had to deliver the message to the present staff at the con somehow and that could have only been done by the higher-ups who planned Hasbro’s attendance at the Toy Fair in the first place.
If they didn’t communicate that, then it’s still Hasbro’s fault at large. That can’t be blamed on assistants that Hasbro hired to take care of their stuff at the event.

“Reproductions of that page or content from it—such as this very post—and the fact that the existence of the product is now known to the public are the consequences Hasbro has to face”

Now we’re getting somewhere….. Because that’s exactly why I’m doing this here.
If Hasbro tries to escape the consequences by letting a post removed, then someone else will bring the consequences over them, which, in this case, is me.
Still, it does not change the fact that Hasbro tried to weasel itself out of its responsibility, which is, regardless of this upload, something to criticize still.
It still removed a post with content a lot of people probably enjoyed, because of its own mistake, and that way, it chose to let others suffer instead of suffering itself for this mistake.
There is really no angle to justify what Hasbro did there, it was wrong no matter how you look at it.

Reproductions of that page or content from it–such as this very post–and the fact that the existence of the product is now known to the public are the consequences Hasbro has to face; there’s nothing to say they can’t have the original source removed, though.

More likely than not, Hasbro as a corporation made the decision that this specific product couldn’t be reported on well before the attendees even arrived. The problem was that somehow that was not conveyed on the convention floor. I don’t think that analogy fits the best, but if we’re sticking with it, the situation would actually be something more like this: the boss of the ice cream shop decides not to sell a particular flavor for whatever reason, but the mare working the counter accidentally does so anyway, due to either the message not being delivered clearly, she being distracted by other customers or her own thoughts, or purely from incompetence. The only difference is that the material in Hasbro’s case isn’t perishable and doesn’t present any hygienic concerns, so they still have the opportunity to put a leash on what escaped. Hasbro obviously can’t stop every instance of this content showing up (I don’t there would be a feasible way to do that anyhow) and they likely won’t, but they can halt the original source; that much is still within their rights as the ones who had the product privately displayed in the first place.

Mistakes are mistakes. It’s Hasbro who has to own up to this and get the consequences for it.
You don’t make someone pay or have disadvantages because of the mistakes you made.
If Hasbro makes the mistake to make something accessible to journalists that isn’t supposed to yet and realizes that mistake later, then this is its own fault for derping this up and it has to feel the consequences for it.
There is such a thing as responsiblity.
And that is the underlying issue here:

Hasbro lets EQD first think they can report about something by putting it out front and center and not even telling them they shouldn’t, then changes its mind when they have already written the news and everything and tells them not to.
This is like giving a filly ice cream and then taking it away a second later and saying “Nah, I changed my mind.”.
I don’t have to explain anymore how messed up this is.
Even companies have responsibilities and need to own up to their mistakes and carry the consequences.
Having power does not free you of these consequences. Hasbro had no right to do this.

It honestly isn’t, though. That “space” is still only accessible through entry into a private event, and as such, the vendors have the power to decide which pieces can and cannot be reported on. Member of the press present are supposed to be informed of this. Somehow that didn’t happen with these specific products (the reasons for why we still do not know), but even so, Hasbro still retains the right to keep their privately showcased products private. Although they didn’t know until after the fact, EQD technically wasn’t supposed to report on these products to begin with anyway; I’m certain if the staff had been told this initially, they wouldn’t have made that post (Let me be clear, I am not blaming EQD in any capacity). Hasbro is just rectifying the situation so it coincides with the way it should have been in the first place.

It was not displayed private, but at a freely accessible space where every journalist could see it and freely take pictures of it.
Censorship remains censorship, no matter how you call it.

I have never viewed Hasbro as faultless in this entire situation; they clearly failed one way or another to stop a member of the press from reporting on a product they did not want the public to have knowledge about.

Even so, Hasbro is still well within their right to stop material in which that product is featured from reaching the public eye, as the product was displayed at a private event and details of it were never meant to leave the convention floor in the first place. Hasbro isn’t encouraging censorship or violating journalistic freedom here at all; they are simply taking all the steps to fix a mistake they made.

While that karaoke machine may have the mane 6 seapony design, it’s removal from the public eye makes little difference in the long run; the entire seapony toyline was reported on and photographed with no problems at all.

You’re still dodging the fact that Hasbro could have put the things it didn’t want to be seen by the journalists invited in an extra, especially secured room to show them there. Lazyness to take such precautions does not count as argument for why they didn’t.
At least you’re admitting some fault by Hasbro now. Progress, I guess….. YAY?
Anyway, my point still stands:

In this case, Hasbro had no right whatsoever to tell EQD to remove it, so I will make this accessible the best I can.
This was a violation of journalistic freedom in this case.

When I heard that seapony stuff was deleted, I frantically turned my browser cache inside out and saved all pics with mane 6 as seaponies. Imagine my surprise when I found out that that all the pics I saved were still up, and only deleted piece was a lame karaoke system.

Events like the Toy Fair are not put on solely for journalists and reporters. It’s a fact that the majority of the attendees aren’t members of the press; a good number of them are professionals in the industry.

If I recall, EQD still managed to report on most of the toys displayed, so why go through the effort of creating a separate display behind closed doors just for a few products? The entire purpose of Hasbro (or any company) bringing toys the the fair is to attract as much attention from the attendees. The private nature of the event already makes the entire affair closed door anyhow. All Hasbro had to do was guide the journalists through, something that they admittedly failed in this case. As to why that happened, I can think of two possibilities. Either Hasbro somehow failed to clearly convey which products are not meant to be reported on to their staff on the floor, or the floor staff was busy with something else at the moment and simply failed to notice EQD staff snapping photos.

Again Hasbro did not showcase their products to the public because this event was not open to the public. That is explicitly stated on the official website. Although Hasbro failed in this case to stop the product from being recorded, that doesn’t mean they can’t prevent articles or media using that material from being released.

I don’t know where you got that quote, but I neither said it nor does it represent my beliefs. I have always believed that journalists and reporters should be free to cover whatever they want to cover without fear of interference by external entities (companies, government, etc.) unless those entities have a legal obligation or right to do so that also does not violate common decency.

You’re still implying that there are other attendees that would bring Hasbro some advantage by seeing the toys they are going to release, while it is a widely known fact that such events are first and foremost for the press to report about things and get the word about those out.
Even if there should be retailers, who might take the products into their range and sell them for Hasbro, if there is something Hasbro does not want the public to know by journalists reporting about it, then it either does not showcase the secret stuff at all or holds a special event for retailers behind locked doors in a room that is arranged specifically for that purpose.
You can’t argue around this:

Hasbro showed this in public while inviting journalists and did no effort to hide it from getting recorded, which is a silent agreement to journalists to report about this and gives them a right to do this.

“Journalistic freedom only as long as a company allows journalists to be free” is no real journalistic freedom and undermines everything about the freedom of press.
That you just flatout refuse to realize this makes your claim of supporting journalistic freedom very doubtful.

Did you even read my comments? I specifically stated that the event was only open to the trade, as per the description on the official website. I never said at any point that the event was solely for journalists; you were the one who brought them up in the first place. I haven’t contradicted myself once; you just seem to be blinded by your own biases or struggle with reading comprehension.

How does me explaining Hasbro’s rightful authority in this one specific instance automatically equate to me becoming Hasbro’s legal team and spitting on all journalistic freedom? I am always in favor of freedom of journalism and the press when there is no legal reason for their reporting to be impeded.

If journalists supposedly have free reign to report on everything at the Toy Fair, then why limit public access to the event in the first place? A corporation has every right to stop a piece of information that was never meant to be seen by public to begin with (provided it’s not detailing something unlawful) from reaching the public eye.

“Let me answer that question with another: what about all the other attendees who aren’t journalists or members of the press?”

Other attendees that aren’t journalists? So, what know? First you tell me that the event isn’t public, just for journalists.
Now you tell me there are others who aren’t journalists.
Can you decide finally? Or do you not even want to decide, because you are only defending Hasbro because you are against journalistic freedom yourself? The more you say, the more it looks like this…..
You contradict yourself quickly.

Keep saying what you want, fact remains fact, if Hasbro invites journalists so they can report about stuff, they have every right to report about all they could see and record.
Journalistic freedom is a universal right. A company has neither rights nor power to suppress any news articles and should not try to get ahold of such power.
If a company doesn’t want to see something in the press, it keeps quiet about it and doesn’t show the stuff it doesn’t want to see, simple as that.
And since EQD didn’t have the spine to stand up to Hasbro and give them the journalistic middlefinger, I will keep this uploaded and show people what Hasbro doesn’t want them to see.

What is so confusing about that sentence? They can peruse and browse the products just like every other attendee present; they simply can’t report on it as journalists.

It is free advertising, but the corporations still get to decide which products can be advertised.

Why do they still display certain products even though they’re not intended to be seen by the public? Let me answer that question with another: what about all the other attendees who aren’t journalists or members of the press?

You are taking this whole situation way too seriously. How on earth is a company making sure that certain products showcased at private event remain private “downright disturbing”?

Sure….. That last sentence made absolutely no sense.
Journalists get invited to such events to make reports about the stuff they see. It’s done by companies to get the word out about their products, as a matter of advertisement, so to speak. Free advertisement, on top of that.
Journalists that get invited are expected to do such reports, that’s all the reason they get allowed in.
If companies don’t want the journalists to report about something, if there’s something they want to keep a secret, then they simply don’t put it on display at the event.
But Hasbro did, so it’s a mystery to me why they take that step.
So, unless this was a troll who pretended to be Hasbro when writing EQD, there was virtually no reason for Hasbro to ask for this news to be removed other than intentional taunting and being an ass.
Has Hasbro maybe decided prematurely to put it on display, then realized it would spoil too much and that they made a mistake with that, so it changed its mind and tried to keep the reveal under cover afterwards? Possible.
But even if that would have been the case, it was Hasbro’s own fault then. You don’t invite the press to your event, allow them to make photos of your stuff, then deny them reporting about it, no matter the circumstances.
A company carefully thinks about what it wants to present to the press before the event starts, after that, it’s set in stone, and the press has every right to showcase what it saw and recorded there.

You imply something downright disturbing here, that a company has the right to nilly-willy boss journalists around and that it’s okay to attack journalistic freedom and you should carefully think about why that is such a disturbing mindset.

The staff from Equestria Daily are likely considered journalists or the press. Even so, they still have to register for admission like every single other attendee. Their presence is a privilege, not a right. Because the event itself is private, Hasbro retains the power to decide what pieces of information make it to the public eye. Why the press is able to view certain products but not report on them is simply a matter of the press browsing the items as attendees physically present rather than as journalists intending to share their findings with a public audience.

Last time I checked, neither The Illustrious Q nor WeAreBorg from Equestria Daily are from “the trade”. They are guys like you and me who just happen to be newswriters for a fansite and yet they were in there.
And even if it’s true what you said and the event is only for the press, why showing something to the press, then not allowing them to share pictures of what they saw and to report about it? A-grade trolling?
If the New York Toy Fair is really just a press event, not a public one, then this request by Hasbro appears as even more ominous and questionable.

Dude, Hasbro shared this information publicly. At a Toy Fair that thousands of people attend. And those thousands of people already know how the Mane Six will look as sea ponies in the movie now.
The cat is out of the bag, there is no hiding anymore.
At this point, this is straight-up bullying by Hasbro when it tells EQD to remove a picture where the Mane Six can be seen as sea ponies in the movie’s animation style, after it publicly shared their looks themselves.
Keep trying to defend that, but you can’t.

There’s a difference between censoring someone for their thoughts and politely asking someone to remove sensitive information that you did not want them to reveal. To you tell everyone your friends secrets that they told you not to tell anyone else because “freedom of speech”, no you fucking don’t.
