This tweet is actually a bit misleading the way it is presented here. This is actually asking about where they were in the flashback during Where The Apple Lies. So this actually is an honest answer about where they were during that time.

Why would you think they would confirm anythings like that? Don’t ask if X is dead, or if Spike would date someone, you would never get honest answer, because it would incite parental complaining, and because you were supposed to get the hints.

I’m not gonna lie, they can seriously make this one of the best episode in the show if they just put some effort into this. Though, they can also make this one of the worst…

From an audience perspective yeah that would be a really stupid cop out but at least from a character perspective, they wouldn’t be horrible parents.
 
Also, other shows did have dead parents with a target demo similar to MLP (at least in terms of age) arguably anything with Batman in it (demo age wise anyway), Hey Arnold up until the last episode, Rugrats had an entire mothers day episode dedicated to Chuckie’s mother being dead. That is just some off the top of my head likely there are far more.
 
So honestly it shouldn’t be that surprising.

Where the Apple Lies Come from the most recent season of MLP right now and was the episode number 23 of the S6. aired 2016-10-08
 
That sound recent enough to me and the tweet with the confirmation of the parent would easily imply that the parents are alive somewhere even if the episode in the S7 is only a flashback

Them being imprisoned somewhere by some kind of villain and everyone thinking they were dead would be one of the few explanations that doesn’t have them looking like the worst parents in the world who don’t care about their family.
