So, either you see it as useless that they are well-developed characters, because you are satisfied with the current manecast, or you see them as redundant if they are just secondary characters.  
So, no matter what is right of these two extremes, you’re going to be unhappy about it and probably hate the movie.
 
Yeah, that is definitely your fault then for not even giving the movie a chance in the first place, no matter what happens, not the fault of the movie, if you end up not liking it.  
If you are really so hard to satisfy, even so hard that you’re already thinking the movie is going to suck when only the characters that appear in it are revealed, then the movie can’t be blamed for this.  
You are just too hard to please and never content with anything.

If they’re main characters, they will need to be established and developed in order to be engaging, and why bother doing that when the show already has such an enormous cast of previously established characters with years of development behind them?
 
If they’re not main characters, then they’re literally just background decorations, and they could easily have been any of the numerous pre-existing background characters, so why bother adding in a whole bunch more with celebrity VAs and make a big fuss about them?
 
Either way it just comes off as trying too hard.

Why do you think that all of these characters are supposed to be big and epic characters with lots of depth to them? Even if a few of them are just small secondary characters who do their job and then vanish again, they still need to be introduced and presented before the movie comes out.  
It sounds like you approach this movie with an exaggerated sense of “perfectionism” and that you set expectations into it that no movie can ever fulfill.  
Some of these characters revealed yesterday WILL be side or secondary characters, because it’s impossible for all of them to be primary characters, you better realize this before you watch the movie.  
Don’t expect all of these characters to have major roles and then blame the movie and call it “bad” just because not all of them have.

That’s the problem I have with it. They won’t be developed worth a darn and will have fraction parts at best, and that is under the GENEROUS assumption that all have equal limelight share, which we know won’t be the case.
 
While I understand the want to increase the view of Equestria and the areas outside of equestria, take a look at the episode that introduced Griffonstone, and that was with us being lucky that we got Grandpa Exposition. That isn’t even going over how Gilda’s personality took the entire episode to fully develop and was based off of her actions in a previous episode, being around 40 minutes JUST to focus on Gilda’s development.
 
Cramming 5-6 NEW characters into a 90 min movie? Expect a lot of “Flash Sentry” moments; IE: character is supposed to somehow have a plot point or another character is emotionally invested in them and there is no real character to them.

Oh goody, a heap more characters to cram into a single movie.

Skystar’s pretty, I’ll give her that.

Okay, but ALL FOUR of these characters look like they could be from different movies… how in hell are they gonna fit all 4 of these new characters in the movie and give them enough screentime?
 
Also, it looks like the move to Boomtoon paid off, the new look is great.

I’ll be quite honest, I’ve been rather content with the movies having nothing to do with the episodes.

This isn’t some grand espionage, it’s still a film to appeal to “little girls”, so if a character looks a particular way, they will tend to act that way. He is wearing a patchy vest, lifting up the collar, all while smirking at the camera, so he looks like a con man/gambler. Yes, some characters change, but I stress the point of SOME.

He’s clearly no sorcerer, he’s wearing patchy clothing and has a smarmy expression, so he comes off as “street gang gambler” or “hobo trying to look cool” more than anything, and neither of those match up in the slightest to Catrina.

This is ironically the 2nd villain who previously played Sabertooth on an X-Men-related project.(The first being Mark Acheson, who voiced Sabertooth on Hulk vs Wolverine(That is where Nolan North debuted as Deadpool.)
 
Also, I hope they gave Ryan Reynolds a role in this film as a nod to Deadpool
