Yeah, I heard of that. I love Star Fox.

Yeah, another problem was probably the huge batteries it required. Some also didn’t like the bright red color scheme, which was hell on some player’s eyes.

What the Fluff?
@Vinyl Fluff
Kinda interesting how it worked, even if the system was a flop.
I hear “VB Wario Land” is usually considered the best VB game. It played more like the first Gameboy “Wario Land” with hat power-ups, but was like a sequel to it.

Yup, Wario Land was considered the best Virtual Boy game. It’s a shame the system got such a bad rap. Some of it was deserved, like the fact that it was far less portable than advertised as (Nintendo actually had plans to release a head strap accessory the next year, but never did due to the poor reception.) But on some levels it was pretty cool. My favorite game was Red Alarm, which was a 3D space shooter. There was actually a Star Fox title planned for the system, but the only public appearance it ever made was at a CES show in a special Nintendo dome, where images of red Arwings were projected flying around. Footage of the game in development was supposedly shown. You can find an old clip of that year’s CES where the dome with the Arwings is shown, but as for the game itself, the only known image was a blurry picture taken of one of the monitors inside, and it only shows an indistinct red ship.

What most people also don’t realize is that it was Nintendo’s first and only 32-bit system, until the GBA came around.

What the Fluff?
@Vinyl Fluff
Huh, I just assumed it worked similarly to the Gameboy’s 4 shades/color screen. Interesting.
I wonder if “Mario Clash” was any good, I hear it was similar to “Mario Bros.” (The simpler 1983 arcade game, not “Super”)

Yeah the Virtual Boy was pretty weird for how it generated images. Each screen was actually the output of a mirror. There were strips of red LEDs in a single row at a 90 degree angle to these mirrors, and the mirrors were mounted on motors. The mirrors vibrated at a super-fsst speed, and the LEDs flashed, creating the graphics line-by-line until the entire image was completed, then it started again, rendering frame-by-frame. Like a CRT in a television, it did this super-fast. Persistence of vision helped the image look convincing. And the two images were offset from each other, creating the illusion of depth.

Again, IIRC because I’m going on memories from many years ago, this made it impossible to do shades normally, but what the system could do is spend more or less time on an element, making it lighter or darker. The mirrors moved fast enough that the image was still fluid. If you read the system’s specs it’ll include this trick when talking about shades.

While I never personally had Mario Clash, I’ve heard it was a great game, and in fact considered one of the system’s best. And a great Mario game in general.

Wasn’t it capable of more shades then that?

IIRC, the hardware itself was incapable of more (the LEDs were either on or off) but it could simulate shades using tricks with the mirrors.

So it’s a yes/no answer. But the joke was low-hanging fruit, so I went for it.

Kinda funny Whoopi Goldberg dressed like Marge Simpson, ‘cause I saw recently an older Treehouse of Horror Halloween ep’ made a joke about her.

Glad your mom didn’t stick to that mentality, yo. My aunt used to be the same way. When she found out that my mother was letting me read Stephen King, she flipped her lid xD .

By the way, is your looking forward to the new film, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them?

Just remember, it’s nutty people misusing religion, not the general population of that group.

Yeah, that’s why I said hardcore, the ones who basically believe anything not specifically written down in the bible as OK is automatically a sin, that kind of thing. I’ve got some relatives that are dangerously close to that kind of thinking.

I’m a christian, but those crazy people do bug me too, They remind me of the ones who tried to ban Halloween & Harry Potter thinking they’re “Satanic” or something, when they aren’t.
Funny story, my Mom used to think Harry Potter was “evil,” (because TBN used to demonize it) but now she’s a huuuuge fan of it.

What the Fluff?
@Bexar Bandito
I remember seeing somebody trying to claim the “Lion King” was “racist,” (oy vey…) because minorities (Woopi & Cheech) voiced the hyenas, and the hyenas were portrayed as “low class bum types,” and such…
Yet, they failed to mention that Ed the dumbest & most incompetent hyena was voiced by Jim Cummings, a white guy.
I swear people try to make an issue out of everything nowadays.
Sorry to bring up P.C. drama, but that kinda annoyed me.

Don’t forget how some of the hardcore Christian groups implied that letting your kids watching Finding Nemo would turn them gay because Ellen DeGeneres voiced Dory.
