DLC isn’t inheritently good or bad. It’s just pushed so hard and marketed in such a way that’s frustrating for consumers, because publishers insist on pushing the boundaries of acceptable DLC practices largely because they get away with it. It’s the same with many new trends in the industry. Large companies tend to exploit and corrupt them because they can get away with it. Game publishers in general just have too much leeway with what they can do with business and marketing and it shows.

DLC done right makes a consumer feel like they’re buying extra content for a game. Much of the DLC done now feels like it’s required for the “complete experience,” or it’s marketed so heavily or in such a convoluted way that it’s just frustrating and makes the game look like a cash grab.

There’s always a fear that when a company starts using a certain practice such as DLC, they will slide down the same slippery slope many game companies have slid far down and start to push less ethical DLC practices. It requires trust that many gamers are in very short supply of to hope that a company doesn’t go down that route, but on the other end, they will probably make their money either way because game consumers are generally very tolerant of unethical business practices for various reasons.

While DLC can be done well, in most cases it ends up being a negative scourge. And I’m afraid Nintendo will go down that hole.

I don’t understand the US VC neglect. As you said, the EU version still got releases. The EU has traditionally been a smaller market for Nintendo than the US.

DLC isn’t that bad really as it allows new content for games, and they haven’t overdone it like some companies. Some like the Animal Crossing New Leaf Amiibo update were free even.

@Nittany Discord
Granted the Mobile game wasn’t made entirely by them, and some other Mobile games are guilty of that, as well. I think you guys are being a li’l hard on them as Nintendo at least doesn’t treat they’re employees & customers like suckers which EA does, or abandon their fans & employees like Konami. Plus Nintendo’s products are usually pretty good quality at least. I dropped my 3DS 15 times, and it still works fine.

@Vinyl Fluff
What’s baffling is Europe is getting VC games long before us too. Ever sense WiiWare & such came out the VC doesn’t seem like a big priority.

Granted, a few recent weeks they released 2 games at a time, instead of just 1. Today they just released “Mario Party 2”, and even fixed the Wii discount problem it had on the Eshop in less then a day. (Unlike Majora which took almost a week to fix.) So they’re getting better.

Yeah, I’m really disappointed in their behavior over the past several years, too. When I saw them offer their own paid DLC for the first time, I knew it was the start of the end for the last vestiges of the old Nintendo.

Nintendo is making more and more shitty decisions lately, and it’s making me dislike the company more and more. The recent inclusion of always-on DRM on a mobile game they published is another example of how they’re trying to become the newest Japanese EA. It’s sad to see a beloved company turn into yet another symptom of the disease of corporate culture in AAA games.

They’re not in super-high demand, but some collectors love ’em.
The most obscure Nintendo device I have is the GBA E-Reader, I even have the cards for DK Jr. Balloon Fight, & other games for it. Even a few rare ones from Nintendo Power magazine. I also have the Super Gameboy for the SNES.

I wanted to get the E-Reader, but it was discontinued before I did. I got a freebie card from a game store, Nintendo Air Hockey.

One problem the accessory had (in addition to the fact that cards could only carry limited amounts of data unless you used a pile of them) was the fact that they had zero copy protection. You could photo-copy the cards onto card stock and it would work perfectly.

Why the fuck does the Wii U Virtual Console have fucking GBA and DS games yet the fucking 3DS virtual console has fucking NES and SNES games.
Makes no sense to me and pisses me off bigtime.

Sounds about right for Nintendo. They’ve always done weird shit with their VCs. It pissed me off to no end that for the Wii they had like half a dozen N64 games on it in Japan but it took months to get even one on the US VC. They treated it like a redheaded stepchild. The Japanese one would get game after game while the US one lagged behind. And they were Nintendo’s own first-party games so no licensing issues were present.

After awhile they just acted like the US one didn’t exist, and stopped their own releases for it. Only third-party games (and almost always the inferior Genesis/Mega Drive versions at that) were released.

WiiU does have them. (Even some not for 3DS or Wii previously)

@LightningBolt
Apparently, it’s difficult to emulate GBA & DS games on 3DS. In fact, I hear the WiiU & 3DS “Ambassador Program” GBA games are actually emulating DS tech’ running GBA software. (So they aren’t even accurate emulations of GBA tech’, hence why they lack multiplayer.) Also, SNES games can only work on the faster New3DS models. I guess the 3DS wasn’t originally made with a “Virtual Console” in mind, at first. In fact, they didn’t start doing that until almost a year after the 3DS came out.

Though, I have a few of said GBA & DS VC games personally, and they work fine on the ol’ TVadmittedly, but I too would rather have portable games on a portable.

They had “Wario Ware Touched” available briefly on the 3DS as a DSiWare title via MyNintendo months ago, but sadly it’s no longer available.

Same here. Yeah, I would’ve liked more cards for it…
The G&W ones, and the last wave of “Super Mario Advance 4: SMB3” cards were never released outside Japan as a result.

The E-Reader levels are all included in the WiiU Eshop/Virtual Console version of SMA4. (Including the ones not released outside Japan.) Though, I don’t think you can access the SMB2 veggie switch options, feathers, and such in that version too without the cards.

I think that’s as many batteries as the Sega Game Gear took. The battery life wasn’t very good on that one though.

Fortunately it didn’t guzzle batteries like a Game Gear. I don’t remember how long each set would last, but it seemed like a decent amount of time. Since there were no actual LCD screens nor backlights, and the method of generating the images used LEDs which not only meant the image was lit up anyway but was more efficient on electricity, I’m pretty sure the biggest power draw was the motors.

I got mine when the system was first discontinued and stores clearanced them down to $25. I also got the AC adapter for like $5. If I knew then that they’d become some hot novelty and be going for their original price now new, I’d have bought a couple extras.

I thought it used D batteries? Still, that’s more batteries then the Gameboy, and GBA used.
Yeah, green would’ve been more comfortable, and worked fine for the original Gameboy, (some complain about it nowadays having been spoiled by the GBColor, and such, but back then most GB users didn’t mind it. Some even prefer using the green screen option for 3DS GameBoy Eshop games) but I guess they didn’t want it to be too much like one. Not to mention, the Gameboy Pocket got rid of the green screen later.

AAs all the way.

The way the battery compartment slid into and clicked onto the controller was actually not bad. It gave the controller some needed weight, and was comfortable.

Yeah, I heard of that. I love Star Fox.
Yeah, another problem was probably the huge batteries it required. Some also didn’t like the bright red color scheme, which was hell on some player’s eyes.

It used 6 AAs. The battery box slide into place on the back of the controller. It could be removed and replaced with an AC adpater… uh, adaptor. It was an adapter piece that had a flip-up back that hid a DC-in jack. You plugged the AC adapter into this (it was the same model that the SNES used) to power it from the wall.

They chose red because it was the cheapest color. I wish they’d have used green. Our eyes are the most sensitive to green, and I think it would’ve looked pretty cool.
