In my headcanon it’s a mistranslation and the changelings actually extract magic from their victims. Hostility would make it more difficult and less efficient, so they impersonate individuals for whom their victims feel strong affection.
 
…I know. I know. But this now makes everything that Chrysalis and the changelings did when they were introduced make a warped sort of sense, including invading Canterlot openly and trying to overthrow the Princesses.
