To be fair, background ponies almost always were incompetent when compared to main cast. MLP sometimes is guilty of making princesses, guards and ponies incompetent to make main 6 look better.

This is hardly a representative sample of Unicorn Tribe, y’know; there are plenty of big ol’ hardbody pointy-headed stallions in the Royal Guard, and Rarity’s dad was good enough at hoofball to get a cutie mark for it.

Advanced spell books there=Scientific journals here. Even if you’re scientifically literate, a lot of the content will go over the head of non-scientists.

They can dish it out but they can’t take a punch to save their lives.

Ponyvillain unicorns are pleb level unicorns. Most at least…

Awwwwww, maaaaann! Ten unicorns and one crippled deaf filly and we STILL can’t find the right candidate!

I figured that bettering your own magic was what the spell books were for. Fine-tuning whatever it is you do, understanding and getting better at the range of spells your special talent makes you good at. Think of how comic book characters get better with their powers over time. The Flash goes from being able to just run fast to making tornado-things and vibrating through walls. (Take Rarity. The initial burst of magic from her cutie mark story let her find some gems, and she can still do that, but she also made special effects for a fashion show, broke up a branch that fell through a roof by turning it into little topiaries, and there was that time she fixed a carriage’s wheel. Your special talent doesn’t give you just one spell, but it’s a range of them, and I don’t see how learning what all you can do and getting good at it would happen without practice.)
 
So you see, there is middle ground between the two extremes of “every unicorn who isn’t Twilight or Starlight is completely useless” and “screw everything we’ve ever been shown or told about how magic works, everyone with a horn need only skim a book to be able to make ANYTHING happen.” Both are clearly not the case (though a lot of people seem to believe the latter, leading me to wonder just what show they’re watching.)
 
Whatever these unicorns’ magic is, it seems it doesn’t have much application in this game. But that doesn’t mean they can’t do anything cool or useful. It’s not like we’ve seen them at their day jobs. (Also, there’s the rules of the game. We were told how magic is used in it. If one of them could just teleport the ball into the goal over and over and over, it’s not like they’d be allowed to.)

I’m not sure what you mean exactly when you say “we” but I’m aware there is several different views of the world of Equestria and some of them are more extreme than others.
 
I could spend so much time talking about the things I’ve seen related to this but the comment section is not the place for it. I wish I could say things shortly but I can’t.
 
Many stories and comics lose all the tension and excitement when the author suddenly decides that unicorns can now do whatever they happen to imagine. A character is in a tough situation? What could possibly save them? Oh look, a unicorn appeared and did a spell X. Now everything is fine lol.
 
Sorry, my intention was not to start rambling about this here. I gtfo now and maybe some day start a forum topic again where I foolishly try to get some decent discussion going on.

That’s okay, this franchise is very weird about it’s magic and the fandom tends to suffer for it.
 
Every unicorn can learn magic, but apparently only their own, except for a completely random subset of them that are blessed with magic in general and are also the only ones that can use the magic of the hundreds of books made for magic.
 
And that’s such a minority of unicorns, you’d think maybe the common unicorns can still use that knowledge to better their own magic, otherwise the books are a waste of paper, but the cartoon seems to think otherwise.
 
To use your analogy, we don’t think all humans are powerful wizards, but there seems to be a number of reasons there should be plenty, if not as great, then at least comparable in their own fields.
 
Like your baseball oc might have dreams of one day batting so powerfully, he hits a homerun that becomes it’s own comet.

Okay I exaggerated a bit and maybe used a bad example. It doesn’t even have to be an OC. Even canon unicorns are often portrayed being much more powerful than they really are.  
I haven’t been part of too many fandoms so I don’t know if this is something common but it just baffles me how many people see things like this. Like if a fantasy book has a couple of powerful human wizards. Would some readers assume that all humans in the book must be powerful wizards?
 
Is that a bad example too? Shit, I don’t know really and I’m certainly letting this bother me way more than it should.

And I don’t think the oc would get off easy either, but you try telling someone their oc isn’t following the rules without getting shooed off.

Oh you know, for magic specialized ponies like Twilight Sparkle, Sunset Shimmer, Starllight Glimmer. Starswirl the Bearded. Also alicorns. Heard any of those?
 
Honestly, in this fandom you can make a unicorn oc with baseball as their special talent and then make them shoot world destroying beams of magic and many people would be just ok with it. Have a pegasus or an earth pony do something similar and it would most likely get reaction like “Hey that’s not possible!”

Indeed, it was well established during the first season already yet this fandom still has a huge amount of people thinking that every unicorn is like Twilight. No, actually even stronger than Twilight since even Twilight had to spend years learning magic and mastering things like teleportation but we have people who think teleportation is a default skill for unicorns or that they can instantly learn it just by reading a spell book or something.
