It’s a post-apocalyptic setting in Japan – I think – and everything is kinda deserty. Also, it’s really ridiculous as the protagonist is a perverted asshat.

Didn’t see Attack on Titan, so I can’t comment on that. Saw the abridged version first, so it’s forever ruined for me.  
The giant robots thing isn’t all that bad because how else are you going to fight giant monsters?  
The sword thing can easily be explained away as different rules for physics and logic for that universe and those universes tend to use magic anyways.  
I’m not going to comment on the Villainous Monologue thing as it should be apparent that one’s ego will tend to make them do stupid things when one is on the cusp of winning.
 
The problem is that you’re using the logic of our own world and overlapping it on the logic of a fictional world. Obviously you’ll get problems if you do that as the logic of any given fictional world doesn’t operate in the same way as our world. Hell, one of my favourite animes has giant robots powered by one’s MANLINESS.

Let’s Kill Them With Swords!” Or “Let’s fight wars and monsters with giant robots!” Or “I have a sword as long as my Schlong Body!” Or “Before I kill you, I’ll say a speech that I wrote yesterday to say my final opinions about you and explain my master plan of evil in such a way that you could kill me at any time but you won’t because you’ll be shocked by my wording.”  
That’s where I see zero logic.

Actually, one of my favourite anime protagonists uses a shotgun himself.

How is it not illogical? All their “badass” always use swords and dodge bullets. No one thinks of shotguns, AKA: scattershot type gun. Never seen a guy with a shotgun in those fights, unless they know that Shotgun>Swords.

I’m honestly expecting that if anyone expects to build us a new home some where, and actually expect to come back to the earth every once in a while, it’s going to have to be the moon or a space station.  
Although I really like the idea of capturing asteroids and trying as gently as we can to park them in a safe orbit between the earth and the moon, and mine the heck out of those things.  
Btw I hear that the moon is littered in radioactive material that would could possibly use to power nuclear reactors.

Yeah, for gravity similar to ours, you’d have to go to either Uranus, Neptune, or Venus. Except Uranus and Neptune are gas giants, no solid ground there. And Venus has an atmosphere of sulphuric acid and poisonous hydrogen sulphide gas at 400 Celsius in the shade. :P  
Mercury and Mars have almost identical gravities, but obviously Mars could be made habitable considerably more easily than Mercury.
 
For near-future colonisation of space our best choices of destination, in order of increasing distance from us, are:  
Space stations  
The Moon  
Mars  
The Asteroid Belt (particularly Ceres)  
Jovian moons (particularly Europa, Ganymede and Callisto)  
Saturnian moons (particularly Titan)  
Uranian moons  
Neptunian moons (particularly Triton)  
Pluto and Charon  
The Kuiper Belt  
The Oort Cloud (face it, basically a natural Dyson Swarm)  
and then out of the solar system altogether. Some of thee may become more or less likely with further examination down the track. xD

Wow! Science is fascinating! Also I have strong doubts that Mars would be any better place to live than any other large rock circling around the sun.

I’d have to re-read my history of when European kingdoms were colonizing different places, but I think back then putting people on ships to find new worlds and profit and exploit them were kinda one way trips.  
But I really like the idea of putting criminals on ships and loosely aiming it in Mars general direction…  
But if they manage to establish a successful colony on a planet with little to no atmosphere or ozone layer, more power to them!  
Btw I wonder what kind of magnetic field does Mars have…
