I don’t mind taste so long as the medicine works. That’s practically the entire concept behind taking charcoal tablets for a sour stomach. Sure, it tastes like chalk dust, but it works.

No. Just no. That is not how NyQuill works. First of all, if it were like “pure alcohol” then it sure as hell wouldn’t be okay for 12 year olds to take it. Secondly, alcohol does more than just “put you to sleep”. I sincerely hope with all my being that you know that.
 
The chemical in NyQuill that makes you sleepy is called doxylamine succinate, a type of antihistamine. Antihistamines are not pure alcohol.
 
Please tell whoever told you this to educate themselves and to stop spreading such painfully idiotic “facts” around. I don’t know what’s worse though, the fact that someone else is telling people this, or that people believed them.

I can say that is false even without looking it up. Even rubbing alcohol is 60-80% alcohol (Somewhere between there), and that shit burns. Imagine something being almost ‘pure’ alcohol. That shit would kill you if ingested. Heck, most beer has around 5-10% alcohol (with nearing 50% on straight vodka).
