It's such a weird psychology, since to even _appear_ in Olympic competition is to be globally acknowledged as one of the greatest in the entire world at a particular sport. The difference in time between Gold and Silver is quite often measured in thousands of a second, and that clearly means that both competitors were of equal skill and talent, one of them just had a better day on the field than the other.
