Perhaps. Though, to me, it seems strange to desire sophistication in one’s swear words. After all these are words that are supposed to represent things so base that they cause people to feel offended (or at least that is how I view them). In that sense, single syllable words that lack a great deal of complexity in their meanings and implications seem very fitting. In a way, this allows the vulgarity of the word to not only be shown in its definition but also in how it is used and applied in a situation (since it is disgustingly simple to use such words).
 
Though I suspect that the reason vulgar words/phrases have gotten less complex/nuanced/sophisticated is less a result of this sort of symbolism, and more a result of the English language being driven to greater peaks of efficiency. After all, before the internet, people primarily communicated via mail, which meant they had a long time to contemplate what they wanted to say and put it on paper. There was no rush or hurry involved because the message itself would take exorbitant amounts of time to get there. (What’s an extra few hours if the letter takes weeks to get to its destination?) But modern times demand greater levels of efficiency than that. Since the advent of texting, email, twitter, etc. the goal of communication shifted from well-written letters to well timed responses and fast paced reactions. And the need for quick responses naturally forced our language(s) to try to contain more information per character than was necessary before. Hence longer more nuanced words tend to get abandoned for shorter, easier to type/easier to say words. And though this isn’t necessarily a good thing, it does seem to be the way things are moving…

It might not be relevant, but it should be. The thought that this curse holds less weight than some words that society has arbitrarily decided are more offensive than others is disappointing. Swearing by some ancient god just has a level of sophistication that fuck or cunt doesn’t.

Though your play on the double meaning of the word “curse” does betray the etymology of how it came to become a synonym for vulgarity, it’s debatable as to whether this is still relevant in modern English. Ever since rationalism debunked curses/hexes/spells/magic as any sort of danger, they’ve lost a great deal of their venom and become quite silly. So it seems unwise to rely on that connection to try and show that a term is vulgar.
 
Instead, I humbly suggest that the offensiveness of a word or phrase depends almost entirely on the amount of weight society decides to put on said word or phrase. For instance, if I was to say “May Zeus strike you to the pits of Hades!” to a random (modern) American, they’d probably just thing I was a weirdo. On the other hand, if I said such a thing in ancient Greek times, I probably would’ve wound up in a fight. The cultural relevance of a thing dictates how much people are willing to become offended when it’s invoked.
 
Arguably, where I live at least, phrases like “god dam” have lost a lot of their edge… but that might just be the little area around me, or even just the people that I know. Not sure if this is mirrored throughout the US or the western world…

Really? “God dammit” is considered vulgar? Compared to terms like ”fuck”, “cunt”, and “shit” (which certainly deserve the vulgar tag), it seems pretty tame… but then I guess it’s best to be cautious and assume the worst when it comes to tagging.
 
Though this makes me wonder, if an image contained the words “Celestia dammit”, would that also be considered vulgar?
