Spitfire and Blaze are twins.

Blaze really has been around from very early on. It’s just that she looks so much like Spitfire. If you go back and look closely at some of “Spitfire’s” non-speaking appearances, you’ll see one-toned hair. That’s Blaze!
 
She was first called out as a separate character in “Rarity Investigates.” When Spitfire goes off to tend to her sick mother (or so she thinks), one of the Wonderbolts still around to be suspicious of Rainbow is Blaze. She speaks (in a voice that’s nothing like Spitfire’s) and is called by name.
 
Now, why they’d give Spitfire a near-clone is beyond me. (If they were supposed to be related or something, they’d have both been worried about Stormy Flare.)
