I never knew that. It’s interesting thing to know though what the fandom was like before I joined :P Although I always knew Moondancer was a name of a G1 pony though, and not something the fandom came up with :P
Oh yeahy, i remeber that comic.
There’s a biit more to the story than that :D
It’s actually Twinkleshine who utters the line “Moondancer is having a little get-together, wanna come?” in one of the very first scenes of the very first episode.
So people came up with the fanon that not only SHE is the one called Moondancer, but Moondancer always talks about herself in the 3rd person (kinda like Trixie does later on). You can actually see this in some old comics like the “Friendship is tragic” series.
Moondancer is indeed a name from an older gen but in this case it was the scriptwriter (Faust) who carried it over to g4, not the brony community. :D
Yeah. this image is from January 2011.

That doesn’t surprise me, it’s like that as well with the Wonderbolt Surprise, isn’t it? I take it this was in the fandom’s very early days? I’ve only been watching the show since December 2011.
It seems like, since the BPs had no names, one of the techniques used on naming them was to give them the names of similar-looking G1 characters.
Oh I never knew that. I do get why people called her Moondancer though, since the show was new at that point and no one realised that they were suppose to be different characters. Didn’t know about Sassaflash and Wind Whilster either!
Yeah, bronies used to call Twinkleshine as Moondancer before her name was officialized as Twinkleshine. likewise, Bon Bon got her name like that, and Sassaflash was Wind Whistler back then.
those were the days…
I realised it was Twinkleshine immediately so I got confused.
