Three days.
 
It had taken him three days from launch to touchdown. Three days drifting through the void of space to review his decisions. He knew this was his best, and possibly only, chance. The lander’s airlock hissed as air was drained, filling his suit with an eerie silence. A familiar tone pierced the serenity.
 
BEEP “Eperts, what is your status?” BEEP
 
“I’ve just about equalized, Houston. Preparing to exit.”
 
Two years. Two years of rigorous training. Even in the toughest scenarios, his determination stuck. The failed weigh-ins, negative physical reviews, all of the blackouts in the ceterfuge were about to pay off.
 
^BEEP “Alright Eperts, we’re seeing a full equalization. You may leave the lander.” _BEEP
 
One. Small. Step.
 
With one small step off the ladder, Eperts was one giant leap closer to his goal. He gazed at the barren lands before him, with nothing but the ambiance of his excited breath. He looked up and laid eyes on the blue marble pinned to the void. Eperts gasped as his mind pieced together the fact he was on a celestial body separate from the Earth. He’d done it! He’d finally do-
 
^BEEP “Eperts, must be a hell of a view up there! What’s your sta~~” _Chick
 
He looked down towards his comms relay and pulled his hand away.
 
Off, as it should be, he thought as a triumphant grin spread across his face.
 
This was it. NOW he has done it. Finally free from those blasted~~
 
His breath caught in his throat as a figure approached from a nearby crater. It couldn’t be! Not here, not now! One of them had found him. Two years of training, three days tumbling through the void, wasted! As it trotted closer, he could only let out an anguished cry:
 
“PONIIIIEES!!!”
