Yep, Adagio thinks she’s the smartest but Aria is more level-headed and sensible when it comes to the planning if only she was allowed to be in charge.

Yes. The lack of coloring is making a bit hard to tell ponies apart.  
Their design is largely dependent on their colours.

Anyway, this is a good sketch! I will admit I thought this was Apple Bloom at first, but up close I can tell it’s Berry. She’ll have a few drinks on Hearth’s Warming Day no doubt :P

There really isn’t that much to shading a picture. Simply think where the light would be coming from, and which parts would be in shadow. Then go over those parts to make them darker.
 
Say the light was above and to the right in this picture. I’d then shade the parts of her mane furthest from that a bit darker. Also I’d do a bit darker under her fringe, and possibly under her chin. (Be wary of this though. It could end up looking like she needs a shave…).
 
It’s all down to trail and error. Practice. Try something simple first, like a character’s mane.  
Also, leaving the parts which would be brightest white can also work. I do it a lot nowadays, as I’m sure you’ve noticed.

You don’t often see a lot of art of Berry Punch, even though she’s a common background pony so it’s nice that you drew her!

Aria is grumpy, sassy, snarky, cautious and witty. She wants to be in charge and speaks in a bored disposition. She is much more level-headed and careful than Adagio. She frequently argues with Sonata and often calls her the worst.

I would like to ask for some advice with shading, I don’t really know how I could do it.  
But it is a good idea it will surely help me a lot when it comes to the picture’s look.
 
Also the dreaded background question. Having shading will help me with that too.

Also yeah. Of course she was a request from a pal. But she sure is a pretty pony who has the holiday spirit, or any spirit as long as it’s has alcohol.
 
I think I will do the Aria in a christmas way too, can you sum her personality up in a few words?
