@Scrounge: Isn’t there also mention of Celestia having just been defeated then? Because I’m pretty sure that would be why in addition to the obvious thing about eternal night’s catastrophic effect not being immediate.

The same amount of time had passed in between Nightmare Moon’s arrival and the present day as it had in the normal timeline, if I recall correctly how the spell worked. That would be at least a year, possibly closer to two.

@Background Pony #EADC: Just a thought, but if I’m not mistaken, this timeline was created because Starlight tried to stop RD’s Rainboom. With that in consideration, wouldn’t the reason why nothing’s been shown to be dying be because at that point, the state of eternal night hadn’t yet taken its toll on the planet?

Just my 2 cents but isn’t it possible NMM can just change her mind about her original plan of having eternal night that she knew would eventually freeze the planet and kill everything instead of all these mental gymnastics that somehow eternal night would not be terrible?
 
She could easily raise the sun once in a while to preserve her subjects that obey her. Like Celestia raises the moon.
 
I always just thought that NMM being a Satan-like figure for season 1 fit well with the motivation to kill everything God/Celesita loved. Whether she would change her mind once ponies pledged loyalty to her seems to still fit that season 1 motivation.

The more I come back here the more I want my stupid idea.
