Oh wow, I love you Google and Wikipedia! So the locomotive operator not only survived that crash, but they fined him 50 francs for causing the accident!  
Only one person died, some lady on the street that got crushed by pieces of the train station.  
The operator was trying to make up for lost time and was driving too fast, and a the breaks failed. Leading the train to go flying out of the train station.

It felt so wrong. It felt so right.

The Montparnasse derailment was more subtle than this.
