Actually, if anything, I’d have to wager in each of the timelines Nightmare Moon doesn’t show up in, she could have been reformed somehow, perhaps at great cost to Celestia, maybe the Elements themselves. If Discord of all beings can be stopped in the other timelines, why can’t the same hold for Nightmare Moon?
Though, the big question is how. After all, this is only a guess, though it is supported somewhat by the show with Luna appearing as herself in the Chaotic Timeline. (Either that, or Discord brought her down from Nightmare Moon to Luna so he could enjoy himself, or Nightmare Moon returning and Discord’s release happened at around the same times to shift NMM’s priorities and cause her to, begrugdingly, join Celestia to defeat him. Which didn’t work.)
 
Nightmare Moon is the embodiment of Grief, Envy, and Grudge against Celestia. She may only want eternal night (that seem to be her only motivation) but still is impossible for a character like Nightmare Moon to ever be reformed. She is evil made Pony.

This fact does not change in any of the timelines we saw, because every timeline we saw happened after all of those events.  
Celestia never stated why or how the connection was lost, nor what it would take to recover the connection.  
There’s a biiig unknown there in whether Discord could have escaped as quickly, or at all, if Twilight Sparkle & co. had not reclaimed the Elements in order to defeat Nightmare Moon, in which case the connection might have lingered for an unknown period of time longer, and/or Celestia could have been forced to recover the Elements on her own.
 
Beyond that, we don’t know enough about magic to know how unique Tirek’s ability to defeat Discord is, so we have no basis on which to conclude beyond argument that Nightmare Moon or some other ponies could not have found some Ancient And Powerful Artifact Trumping Discord, or even that Nightmare Moon could not have foreseen Discord’s release and figured out a way to beat him (there’s a big difference between this guy on the street can’t beat this other guy in a spontaneous fist fight, and this scientist-warrior-president can’t devise a war strategy/technology to defeat this other guy with a years’ preparation.) Alternatively, that an appropriate team-up of some combination of Nightmare Moon, a voluntarily freed Celestia, a voluntarily love-buffed Chrysalis, Sombra, the Alicorn Amulet, The Smooze, Cerberus and some unknown monstrosities of Tartarus, Sunset Shimmer, and The Fire of Friendship, couldn’t overcome him.

Perhaps discord isn’t as immortal as we thought,if you belive that discord  
Was actully quite Vulnerable when he’s in his stone prison and that breaking it would in fact break his still petrfied soul and only the good will of a Celestia waiting for the rigth time to reform him for good was the only thing keeping him from being hurled into the sun. Then a lot of these timelines can be more stable.
 
If so many of these timelines then can avoid the horror of discord,certainly Nighmare moon who seemed smartest and formed the most stable timeline would at least recognize the danger if anyone would and throw him in a volcano or something as soon as she got to canterlot.
 
With the total war against Sombra perhaps Celestia relized she couldn’t risk discord getting out in the chaos and indisposed of him somehow to prevent another disasterous burden equestria.
 
Not sure how the changlings would deal with him or even know what he is since very little in that universe is shown. Same with Flim and Flam.
 
If Tireck managed to get to full power in his timeline then discord is Presumbly already defeted. Or maybey even working together since Tireck seemed to know of him.

Here’s my justification for assuming Discord never breaks free in certain timelines:
 
  • Without the rainboom, Pinkie never discovers her talent for parties.  
  • Because of that, she never ends up throwing Diamond Tiara’s cutecenera.  
  • Which means that the CMC never meet up there and become friends.  
  • Meaning that they would not have been close enough to be arguing as much as they were during their field trip in Return of Harmony.  
  • Which means that there wouldn’t enough disharmony in Discord’s general vicinity to begin breaking the seal on his prison.
     
    Of course the biggest point in its favor is, like you said, the fact that Discord trumps everyone else in terms of raw power. The fact that he’s not there in most of the timelines would seem to indicate that he either never showed up to begin with or they found some way of preventing him from coming back.

What I meant was the spell to imprison Discord was originally cast by Celestia and Luna through the Elements of Harmony, correct? And if the Mane 6 never became the bearers of the Elements, then the Ontological Inertia of the spell wouldn’t be as large since no one’s taken the Elements since then. I am mostly speculating here, though, so I might be wildly wrong on that.
 
As for the rest, well by that logic analyzing at all is rather pointless, because headcanons themselves also did not happen. So what’s your point? :P I stated two facts from the show, which lead to a very educated guess over a conclusion, that’s it. x)
I liked the episodes very much, I was just giving my two cents. Remember I did pre-face my entire post with the fact that I was over-analyzing everything.
 
Hm. Well, I kinda do tend to get a little asinine when people keep pointing out these honestly minor and non-intrusive plotholes. People probably could have wanted more focus on Discord’s future, but honestly, we all pretty much knew how that was going to go. After all, the Mane 6 were essentially in it for the better part of the Season 2 premiere.

Or you could be right…but since the Mane 6 weren’t able to become the new Elements of Harmony, there was still a bit of a connection to Celestia and Luna, perhaps allowing the spell that imprisoned Discord to continue until at least after the point Twilight arrived in each of the timelines.
 
And another thing: you can say that’s what would have happened, but unfortunately for you, that did not happen, so we can’t really speculate much further than that, now, can we?

‘Discord is not released’ is not a valid argument. As I said, there is zero proof from what’s been said in the show that he wouldn’t escape. ‘Discord is not released’ is a forced assumption to make a headcanon work without Discord. What I said in my post is as close to canon as we get regarding the status of Discord’s statue at any point in time. c:

Chances are, Discord just thought it would be funny to wait and watch.  
Headcanon: in his own timeline, he came at the same time as one in the show and was simply bored.  
I mean, a War, a Rebellion, an Empire and Capitalism, it’s gold for the Spirit of Chaos!  
The only other timelines we saw are the one with Tirek, who might have defeated him, and the ashlands, which I still think is Ahuizotl’s boring timeline. Or the Tantabus’.

There are holes with all of these timelines if you analyze thoroughly enough, because obviously the show writers are thinking about that one villain for each timeline, only. And that’s cool. It’s a kid’s show.
 
That said, over analyzing show lore is one of my favorite things. Let me join you.
 
Fact: Discord would fuck everyone’s shit up, except Tirek (assuming Tirek gains enough power from other ponies to then trump Discord’s magic in Tirek’s alternate universe, as he did in the Timeline Prime).
 
Nightmare Moon, Chrysalis, Sombra and the FF Brothers have zero way to deal with Discord, because they don’t have the Elements, nor a powerful enough magical status to drain his magic. Once those two things are off the table, Reality Warping trumps armies of drone ponies, changelings, Princess Butthurt and whatever corporation bullshit Flim and Flam put together.
 
Fact: Discord was stated by Celestia in The Return of Harmony to have escaped from his stone imprisonment, because the connection that Celestia and Luna once had with the Elements was severed long ago, meaning the spell that turned him to stone way back when was slowly weakening over time. This fact does not change in any of the timelines we saw, because every timeline we saw happened after all of those events.
 
Which means…
 
Educated Guess: Discord would escape imprisonment (at roughly the same time he did in Timeline Prime) in any of the alternate timelines, with or without the Mane Six ever getting together or not, because none of the timelines go back far enough to fuck with anything that transpired between the sister’s original battle with Discord, and then the sister’s falling out with each other.
 
Essentially, every timeline that isn’t Timeline Prime or Tirek’s, ends with Discord ruling Equestria again. It really doesn’t matter what villains show up to the party down the line, if you’re not the Magic Absorbing Asshat that is Tirek, or the Mane Six with the Elements. Once Discord escapes his statue, his power trumps that of everyone else, so he’d usurp them.

It’s still possible, as Twilight said “the magic of Equestria was weaker”, meaning that if someone had been sealed away by Luna and or Celestia previously, they’d have less to overcome because the Elements of Harmony were no longer represented, only existing.  
Without some bond to strengthen the elements of harmony, the tree of harmony would die or become too weak to hold back any future or existing evil forces, hence wasteland.
