Ok, let’s go with that: The fluff goes a good portion of the way through something that is usually almost completely muscle and cartilage with a thin layer of fur. Seems legit.

I’m sure kids could easily interpret it as “wing armor”.

Having a limb ripped off in combat and later replaced with a prosthetic is a very violent concept to put in a show rated TV-Y.

Meanwhile, Pinkie’s carrying around an old party horn. Blowing it makes her calm down in tense situations. She can even smell the faint residue of cupcake frosting still on it.

“Well, it was about 5 years ago. Delta Unit was sent to intercept a squadron of crystal pegasi above Ghastly Gorge. Our intel network told us they were planning to drop a Weapon of Mass Crystalization on Ponyville. My squad mates engaged the enemy and I quickly identified the bogey carrying the WMC. I chased that foal of a nag from one end of the gorge to another before a bit of fancy flying sent him falling all the way to the bottom. Just as I was about to fly back out, a quarry eel came out of nowhere and bit my wing clean off. I guess I was lucky he didn’t get the whole thing. All I remember was blood pouring out behind me as I landed in a ditch, and then everything went black. When I came to, some spiky-maned earth pony was fitting me with an auto-wing. Said he was the Doctor. ‘Doctor Who?’ I asked. Just the Doctor, he said. Oh yeah, and he said these two mares had dragged me out of that Tartarus-hole and brought me to safety. Later on I found out it was Pinkie the Crusher and Maud the Destroyer, the two sergeants in command of Earth Pony Infantry Division 314. And, well, we’ve had each other’s flanks since then. Right?”

Even when she loses her wing (one of the things that means the most to her) RD continues to risk her life and fight to protect her home.
