M.A. Larson has said that he originally wrote Magical Mystery Cure as the series finale since he was told that it was going to be the finale (at first). He even asked for a two-parter to properly end the series, but was denied. The actual episode we got was somewhat different to what he originally intended as well (after all the script edits etc.).
 
My favourite thing was that he wanted the last shot to be the book from the intro of Friendship Is Magic closing up, as that’s what I’ve always imagined the whole series should end with. I like to think that we get a big group shot (just like this image, but bigger) that fades into a storybook illustration. Then it zooms out from a page of the book and the book closes, but the cover depicts the Elements of Harmony.

Someone else had suggested that they write each finale like it would be a good way to end the series. When they first start working on each finale, they’re never quite sure if it will be the last one. Meaning, it sounds like the show staff usually doesn’t know if they’re getting another season until work on the current season is already well under way, possibly.

They wrote it likely expecting s6 but still in a manner that if s6 didn’t happen it would be a good series finale. There’s no element hanging on like Twilight as a new Princess or getting a new castle that begs for more as in the previous two seasons.
