Theory: Midnight ripping open the portals began just after the end of the season finale when all is made right and whatnot, and the portals and humans seen through them alerts Twilight that something’s gone wrong in the human world; she discovers Sunset has been trying to get in contact and rushes through the portal to aid her, which leads us to~

Either Flim and Flam got control of the farm and industrialized it after defeating the Apples in the cider-making contest or Applejack returned from Manehattan with some experience in modernization to better the farm for the worst.
 
Time will tell, but as for Starlight, she’s already tempting me with posting those Garry’s Mod pieces of her being punished for altering history.

it is flim and flam because they are the ones with the machines not applejack didn’t she live in manehatten? she would still live there if the rainboom didn’t happen
