Remember that guy who was tortured and said torturing was streamed to facebook? The media and even the police were all over "Oh we shouldn’t label this as a hate crime." Now though the media is all over condemning this for being charged as a hate crime.
Also trivia fact: 5 states (according to Wikipedia at least) have political views listed under hate crime motivations. Maryland (where the two teens were charged) isn’t one of them, but it’s possible to have it be as such.
By the way, what the fuck does Christianity and Whiteness have anything to do with this? I’m guessing it was the article, but if we’re talking "spirit of the law" from the headline, then the "spirit" of hate crime laws is to prosecute those who commit crimes based off of hatred for a person in specific way. If religion is classified, then "spiritually" political views could be classified as such.
