That criminals break laws–or equivalently that they don’t care about obeying the law–is not a valid argument against gun control laws. It’s an argumentum ad nauseam in that it is asserted criminals will break gun control laws because they break laws by definition of what a criminal is. Furthermore, you could apply this fallacious argument against any law.

If the criminal is armed and threatening your life, you have every right to respond in kind. What you don’t have is the right to act as judge, jury, and executioner just because someone is breaking the law. Not even the state is allowed to kill people without due process and exhaustive appeals.

After reading more on it, I found out that it was only successful in the short run. Our deficit did go down and unemployment also went down a bit. In my opinion, cutting down taxes and increasing spending on the military was a dumb idea from that policy and it’s a wonder why such an idea wasn’t repeated.

Reagan holds the record for most government shutdowns in his presidency.
