Slight difference between a sprawling city like Tokyo and a quaint town; even Ginevra and Zurich are comically dwarfed.
 
At the end of the day people were told that their style of architecture was a no-go. I’m sure they’d say the same to McD’s if they planned to open up a 6-story food joint with a giant revolving bright yellow M.

But most arguments used for the 2009 Swiss minaret referendum weren’t just complaints about the architecture. Removing a minaret doesn’t mean you removed the mosque in its entirety.  
Most Swiss mosques are actually quite small, or at least not that large.

I wouldn’t expect the removal of the minaret to fell the entire structure, no…
 
But I’m not sure why this is a big deal; in most communities and neighbourhoods owners and tenants have to agree to and follow decoration and architecture rules. Swiss decided they had theirs.
 
Someone’s faith in a religion shouldn’t depend on how closely it resembles some architectural style from a thousand years ago in an area thousands of miles away. If people have to fear them doing something “rash” over architecture, well, that’s pretty messed up.

I can assure you that the “happiness and quality of living” goes down dramatically for people that have community-focused buildings spring up next to them, especially ones with megaphones. And I very much include good old christian churches in that; have suffered enough processions and weddings and whatever else in my lifetime.

Then don’t try to poke the hornet’s nest unless the problem of intolerance within the local Muslim community has been properly dealt with. You must be aware of how attached Muslims tend to be to their rituals and symbols.

Then the proper thing to do would be balancing the happiness of both the Muslims and non-Muslims. As i said, reducing the volume of calls to prayer would disturb non-Muslims less, while still providing Muslims with a religious ritual/symbol, which arguably brings them happiness.

By this logic, Muslims shouldn’t be trying to poke the hornet’s nest by immigrating to foreign countries with the expectation that they can simply carry on with the same rituals and symbols as they always have.

To me, a Muslim commentor is only poking a hornet’s nest when he’s spreading hate speech. A minaret or mosque, alone, doesn’t immediately represent Islamist bigotry, just a place of prayer, communion, and religious discussion.  
If you want to regulate the local Muslim community to prevent radicalization, then i’m afraid there are better ways to do it than just simple-mindedly banning a minaret. It’s better to address the speech and doctrine problem directly, possibly in direct communication with the local Muslim community.

But the ban isn’t about architecture. It’s not a ban on “towers” or “spires”. It’s a ban on “minarets”, and it’s under the heading of “Église et État” (Church and State). It’s specifically a ban on the practice of Islam.

Honestly, the minaret isn’t even a crucial part of a mosque. It was built in the early age because they needed a way to incite the prayer times to the surrounding populace. Nowadays, most minarets are just slender towers with speakers up top, connected to a microphone inside the mosque.
 
Technically, we don’t need it anymore since we can just attach the speakers to the mosque itself instead of building separate structures.

Talked to my mom about this, and she said that minerats make the mosque look nice and pretty nowadays, but aren’t necessary. So now you have two Muslims saying that minerats are pretty pointless to have when you got modern technology.
