That’s why I said it’s not the thing that will lead to a tyrannical Government but one of the necessary components.

Also, the Cold War is over. Stop acting like China and Russia are our sworn enemies we need to kill, we do business with China all the goddamn time after all. Besides that, even if we cut our military back by 25% we’re still strong enough to not appear weak.

Besides China only has one active Air Craft Carrier, same deal in Russia, and we have ten. TEN! I think we’ll be ok.

When did the US become the world police ?
Countries can change, and the more power their leaders have the easier it can be for them to get the complete control. This has happened before, and one day it might happen in the US if the political system doesn’t control that.
Also, getting more military to be the best is just a dick measuring contest. All it gets you is having your ‘enemies’ do that as well to avoid the risk of getting overtaken by the US in case of any conflict. Ever heard of a cold war ?

Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

To correct this phrase it’s more like power reveals. The work of Robert A Caro on Robert Moses and Richard Nixon revealed that it wasn’t so much the power these people held that made them bad, but the fact that they held power at all revealed to the world just who they were. Robert Moses in just being a tyrant of city development despite never holding elected office and who willfully orchestrated the upheaval of many communities so he could build more freeways and make cities in the US such pieces of shit as they are today. And Richard Nixon in that he’s never had any sort of ethical qualifications to do anything morally or ethically correct and that just became exacerbated when he became president; in fact the judge at his first trial as a private lawyer straight up told him in court that he felt that Nixon did not have the ethical qualifications to even BE a lawyer and he was astonished he ever became one.

Applied to the US more broadly, it is not so much that the power the federal government has been gaining for the past century over our lives has been corrupting it, but that it has been revealing it more and more by its actions for the beast it truly is. And we don’t need to look to the ethically murky waters of the Cold War and trace the US’s history of genocide or support of genocidal regimes to prove that point, but we can look at cases more recent. From the law agencies of the US failing to assess the risk of far-right extremism to the DOJ straight up ordering its agencies to deprioritize investigation of far-right extremism.

The case of a larger security apparatus won’t make it more corrupt or evil, but finer tune its pre-existing evil and exaggerate the necessities the US must go through in order to maintain the status quo and for power to remain the same.

Exactly what they said in 2016. We still won.

Y’all only won because of an archaic institution that was meant to give slave states more power and we should get rid of it.

Another point: the idea that more rural, less populated states need to have more electoral points per voter in order to avoid getting out voted by voters from more urban states might have made sense in the 18th and 19th century, but not any more.

Voter demographics are much more diverse intra-state now. Presidential candidates only win each state by a little over half the popular vote. For example, the biggest win in 2016 was about 60% for Clinton in California (Edit: this actually wasn’t the biggest margin in 2016, my bad). The Electoral College actually does the very thing it’s supposedly meant to stop: making a ton of people’s votes mean nothing.

The popular vote winner has lost the election 5 times: 1824, 1876, 1888, 2000 and 2016.
1824 is kinda the outlier because not just did John Quincy Adams lose the popular vote to Andrew Jackson, but he also earned fewer electoral college votes than him. What happened is 4 candidates won electoral college votes that year (which almost never happens), resulting in nobody getting a majority, so the election was then decided by the House, and a corrupt deal was cut between Adams and Speaker of the House Henry Clay to pick him despite Jackson having more delegates.
In 1876 there were 20 electoral college delegates who were in dispute, as both parties claimed to have won Florida, Louisiana and South Carolina. To resolve this we had yet another corrupt deal struck where Republican Rutherford B. Hayes was given all of the delegates (despite Democrat Samuel Tilden earning more votes) and in exchange the Republicans agreed to remove troops from the South. This of course ended reconstruction and allowed the south to fall segregationist control.
1888 is really the only one where there really wasn’t anything shady going on. Harrison just straight up won more electoral votes than Cleveland despite winning fewer popular votes.
Then you have 2000, where Al Gore won the popular vote, and later recounts showed that he also should have won Florida and therefor won the electoral vote, but the Republican majority Supreme Court handed the election to Bush anyway.
And of course we had 2016, where Trump won a handful of states by tiny margins, yet those states refused to conduct recounts to verify the results. When you couple that with the demonstrated lack of security in the voting systems and the hacking attempts and voter roll issues in addition to the Republicans voter suppression tactics, it’s quite difficult to call any part of that election legitimate.
So yeah, our political system is broken, it has always been broken, but every time it “breaks” it benefits the powerful so they aren’t going to fix it.

Speaking of the economy. Those wonderful phone calls that Trump had with China about coming back to the table?

Yea, Beijing has no record of them ever occurring. China’s rep has said that no phone calls or communiques of any kind have taken place.

Stocks dipped back down to the level they were before the “news” broke.

So, if we want to talk lies…

Clay came in third and decided to support Adams seemingly out of spite against Jackson, thereby granting Adams an absolute House majority. The “corrupt bargain” claim was then brought up by the Jacksonians, who made it the cornerstone of their relentless revenge campaign against the Adams administration, ultimately leading to Jackson’s landslide victory four years later.

They figured out that debt-free college frees up trillions in wealth amongst students, slows the rate of upward wealth consolidation, and encourages more participation in higher learning thus creating a more educated society and opens more opportunities in job fields/creation of new job fields.

Yeah, at this scale $20 million is really pathetic. Hell, the LVMH luxury group has pledged to give half of that sum by themselves (probably to look good on their tax returns, but still…)
And then Bolsonaro decides to just decline it. Don’t you ever just think about how a RPG has an effective range of four-hundred meters?
In light of Notre Dame donors not paying out their promised money though I’d hazard had it gone through the luxury company probably would not have followed through.

And now Bolsonaro says he won’t discuss of accepting the money until Macron “takes back his insults”. Pretty rich, coming from someone who’s been so extraordinarily rude to the aforementioned’s wife that Brazilians have now taken to apologizing to her on Twitter for their president’s behavior by the thousands.

College tuition has increased at an exponential rate while overall wages have stagnated.

Meanwhile, more and more jobs are requiring degrees or trade training, nesscessitaing education. The number of jobs are also not growing proportionally to the population. Meaning, more people need degrees, required by more employers, but there are less overall jobs at lower pay than there was 10 to 20 years ago.

We need people to keep getting educated, after all, when a pumper breaks his back, or farmer Joe has a kid with Downs, they rely on the educated professionals.
Latecomer

At the very least, you could switch to a system like my country (England), where you only have to pay the debt if you’re making a certain amount of money. (Even with that, we had massive protests every time the fees rose. And it’s still free in the rest of the UK.)

And for the inevitable “stop taking useless degrees”, I give you the following breakdown.

Out of 100

Engineering degrees make up 6%, about 97,900 degrees awarded between 2015 and 2017.

Biology and biomedical, 6%, 110,000 degrees

Psychology, 6%, 118,000 degrees.

Social science not including psychology, 8%

Health and Human services, 11%,

Business, 19%.

A vast majority of degree holders have degrees in fields that should have abundant jobs.

A Palestinian on a legal school visa to fucking Harvard had his visa canceled, and was deported to Lebanon all because immigration officials didn’t like what some of his friends posted on social media.

If someone coming here to study at Harvard doesn’t qualify as “the best” then I don’t know what does.
