but if they do hate the West, why don’t they go after Latin America as well? it seems that when Middle Eastern extremists or whackjobs target one country, it’s gotta be the United States, Canada, Great Britain, or some other European country.

Shot in the dark, but assuming Iran knew who owned the ship I’m guessing they’re lashing out at people who were part of the original Iran Nuclear Deal.
 
America is the bad guy in this current kerfuffle, but that doesn’t change the fact that Iran would be miffed about the previous deal either.

Maybe they have a more subtle intent behind it. Like getting the British to think it isn’t worth being friends with us if that sort of thing keeps happening. I mean I doubt the British are all too happy with us these days anyway (for understandable reasons).
 
Or maybe they’re going after the British because as much as they want to stick it to the US, they’re genuinely worried about the reactionary twit in the White House authorizing a full scale war because there’s nothing good on TV and he needs something to do before his fast food arrives.

Or maybe because it was carried out by the IRGN, a paramilitary force, not much will come of it beyond more saber-rattling from all sides. The IRGC (The organisation that the naval component belongs to) has a nasty habit of operating on its own initiative and is only answerable to the supreme leader of Iran and not any of Iran’s democratic institutions.
 
The question is how far they’re willing to push their luck before either Khamenei tells them to knock it off, or the full might of the US empire comes-a-knockin’.

You know, I genuinely do not understand why people are so angry about CNN pointing out that Kyoto Animation does in fact employ more women than is common in the industry. It’s a very minor detail – it’s mentioned exactly once in the article as part of listing the good things that Kyoto Animation did and why, as a consequence of this, it’s thus a very bad thing that it was attacked.
 
Seriously, why is a newspaper saying “it’s a terrible thing that a studio that did so many good things, including being inclusive in its hiring practices, was violently attacked” such an upsetting thing?

in fact, I actually commend Kyoto Animation for that. not many Japanese animation studios employ as many women as they do men, if not more.

I’m inclined to go with the innocent interpretation. You see the same thing after any tragedy. After a school shooting, it’s all about the victims’ awards and volunteer work. You don’t see any think pieces saying, “Actually, Doug was kind of an asshole. Not saying he deserved to be shot, but I can see where the guy was coming from.”

They did confirm the motive behind it, turns out 41-year old male suspect, which I will not name, was angry at KyoAni because he claimed they were plagiarizing him from his novel.

And again, I honestly don’t see how listing the good things done by the victims of a crime is putting politics in a tragedy. KyoAni evidently did a lot of good things – good! So of course people reflecting upon the attack are going to talk about them.

A resource based economy is the root of everything fucked up with modern society.
 
Resource based economies were great back in the 20th century and earlier, when resources were hard to get.
 
With modern technology, a resource based economy is unable to provide the jobs to support a population.
 
A resource based economy does not have the mechanisms to distribute a nation’s wealth so that the entire population can live at a reasonable level.
 
In the modern economy, where 1% of the population can grow enough food for everyone, where resource extraction, refinement, and manufacturing is increasingly automated, having a resource based economy is not a source of prosperity, it’s asking for a societal upheaval that will make the French Revolution look like a tea party.
