“Expensive” is a relativistic term here. Sure, it’d be “expensive” for the wealthy to pay for it out of taxes. But having one or the other in the current climate would also he expensive for the people receiving access to these resources as well.

A welfare state may get someone into the hospital, but it doesn’t pay rent. And in so far as insurance lobbies exist the insurance may always be sub-par.

At the same time, UBI without welfare also leads to an expensive end on its own. With everyone having free money it’s more than likely in the logic of profit that expenses for necessary utilities like rents or even unsusidized or non-public healthcare costs will climb without any controls. Everyone with a guaranteed source of cash is someone who is guaranteed to pay no matter what, and taxes made to off set the cost of UBI become themselves offset by landlords and health care providers jacking up their costs. This is the devilish reality of Yang.

Ultimately you will have to bind UBI with welfare so that extra money is actual extra money and not a base pool that all profit seekers can suck from. This access leading to an over all independence from mind numbing labor and a little more power in the hands of everyone else against the billionaire interests of the world.

Billionaires don’t need eight yachts after all. Billionaires shouldn’t even exist. There is nothing you can but with a billion that actually adds anything to your life.

One yacht minimum. Or we liquidate the class.

They already are. People like Bezos and Amazon make trillions that they dump into some dark hole in the ocean. Then they pull a ten million dollar stunt and hope no one notices that represents one-hundredth of a percent of the wealth they generate. Encouragement to spend doesn’t do anything either, trickle down has proven to be a disaster and doesn’t work the way they want.

What can be done to move that hoarded wealth out of their black holes is to seize it, either by taxing it or more extreme measures. They could be fired from their C-Suite positions, 90% of everything taken on the spot, New Hampshire and the Cayman Islands invaded, and the company assets either nationalized to pay for the programs or turned over to the employees so they won’t even need welfare or UBI.

Trickle down is a nightmare, and Kansas proved as such during Brownback’s administration. During his term of office taxation and state spending was cut back to the bone, and then some in a wild experiment in libertarian trickle-down economics. The state only regained some semblance of control when Brownback’s own party rebelled against him and in 2017 the Republican controlled legislature over-rode a veto and restored taxes and spending to what they were.

He had promised some 100,000 jobs, but during the peak of his cuts in 2016-2017 the state actually lost jobs. As the Kansas star quotes:

Ken Kriz, an economist at Wichita State University who has studied Brownback’s tax cuts, predicted in 2014 that the state would not meet Brownback’s campaign goal.

“I hate to say I told you so, but I told you so,” Kriz said Friday. “It’s further evidence that the current set of policies is not having the desired effect.”

Kansas picked up a one-billion dollar deficit.

Browback’s administration also cut school funding to a level deemed unconstitutional.

Likewise another state experimenting with the same measures, Oklahoma just lost 30,000 school teachers over low pay

The fact of the matter is that trickle down doesn’t work and leads to a lot of problems within the economy and growth that only benefits the top percentile of the economy. Everyone else is left to fend for themselves, especially those already vulnerable to the number games of the Koch cronies. And those jobs added in cleaning and maintaining yachts, let alone maintain them? Minuscule compared to the amount of jobs that could be had if spending was allocated to the greatest number of people, the largest consumer base: me and you. Benefiting the wealthy doesn’t add to anything since their going to squander their wealth in the most economically inefficient way possible since they’ve proven to not be interested in spending anything. They only want their accounts to grow and you don’t get that by trusting them to voluntarily raise standards by increasing the already large room they have to wriggle about in; for a long time in mid 20th century the tax rate never dipped below 70%, now it’s 40% .

And it’s merely getting our money back. Park a air craft carrier off to the side and ask for our cash back to re-invest it into some very necessary infrastructural improvements and be off. Those tax havens aren’t using it to fund their own programs, so it’s not like the entire social web is going to fall apart over night and the islanders are going to starve.

Your idea for the Caymans reminds me of when the US parked some warships off Japan and asked them to open trade.
