I don’t know what the official reason they gave was, I’m just assuming that the people living in the city no longer want that statue on public land. And if that’s the reason then I agree with them, I mean it is their tax dollars that go to maintaining that statute

It was a commission by Henry Shrady and Leo Lentelli for the National Sculpture Society by philanthropist Paul Goodloe McIntire.

No, the statue wasn’t funded by taxpayers. Paul McIntire and some members of the National Sculpture Society had paid Henry and Leo to make the statue for giving to Charlottesville.

It was typical of Paul, a generous philanthropist, to commission statues for cities to have and place.
 
Although, sadly for Leo, Henry, and him, the Robert E. Lee statue has become a symbol of idolizing for the white supremacists, even though Lee wasn’t a white supremacist himself and was glad he had lost in the Civil War and that slavery was abolished.
 
To quote Confederate General Lee:  
So far from engaging in a war to perpetuate slavery, I am rejoiced that Slavery is abolished. I believe it will be greatly for the interest of the South. So fully am I satisfied of this that I would have cheerfully lost all that I have lost by the war, and have suffered all that I have suffered to have this object attained.

Robert E. Lee’s view on slavery was that slavery was an evil, temporary, torturously preparatory institution bestowed upon the blacks by God. Lee was different from others in that he attempted to reconcile with slavery rather than accept the myth at face value taught in churches back then that blacks were forever destined to be slaves; although, Lee had took his idea of slavery being torturously preparatory to an extreme as he was known for being cruel to his slaves, despite his discomfort. When the war began, he couldn’t bring himself to turn his back on his own state Virginia, which was a part of the Confederacy. When the Confederacy lost and fell, he had finally felt free from the myth about slaves.

Yeah, most Americans don’t know a lot about their history (e.g. Christopher Columbus being a liar and slave trader when he arrived at the Caribbeans in 1493, taking all of the Arawak Indians’ resources, putting the men up for slavery or forced labour camps in the colonies called the ecomienda system, and giving girls to his lieutenants to rape) or their own constitution (e.g. the First Amendment prevents CONGRESS from messing with the freedoms of religion, speech, press, petitioning, and assembling).
