At least Alex from IHE and his friends seem to think so.

Honestly, I can’t agree with them in good faith. Mainly because the NC’s video about The Wall wasn’t a review. It was a 40-minute sketch where he parodied and insulted the movie, only to at the end say, “Oh, it was fine.” Literally his entire review of the movie, all the points in the video where he talked about the movie, were in those ten seconds near the end.

…You are aware that what he says in those sketches is the review, right? It’s like you can talk about something through song and acting by showing what they’re talking about.

And people can parody and make fun of what they love, like Dragonball Abridge. And if he didn’t have a soft spot for the movie, I doubt he would go to the lengths he did to make a 40 minute parody review.

He doesn’t really say much about it in those sketches. The most I got from it (at least in the lyrics I could understand–there were no damn subtitles, and their voices were muffled) was that he thought the film was pretentious and unsubtle, which coming from him is a damn joke considering that he’s one of the least subtle people I can think of. The dude literally created his brand based on being as unsubtle as possible, with his screaming and overreactions, so criticizing this seems a little hypocritical.

I think the biggest issue, though, is that he just doesn’t understand the source material, the album, the real life events that inspired it. To enjoy The Wall, you can just listen to the music and watch the movie, but if you want to make a review, if you want to dive deeper, you have to do a little more research.

Isn’t that mostly the opening song? And literally he talks about how great the movie is visually right before the last song. I will agree that the voices are muffled at times and lyrics would be great, though I didn’t check to see if they were an option.

And I think that’s mostly his early years you’re thinking of. Besides, overreacting for the sake of comedy isn’t the same as being unsubtle.

I don’t know. Constantly exaggerating his reactions is what I’d call unsubtle. You don’t have to yell a ton to show that you’re angry at something, happy about something, etc. I’ve learned this over the years in my own reviews. Meanwhile, Doug’s reactions seem to be getting more and more comically exaggerated (yes, I’d argue that they’ve gotten moreso since his early years). Remember literally anything he says about Christmas, for example?

@Lord Arceus
I haven’t regularly watched him since 2015. I’ve tuned in for reviews of his that interested me, but I fell off as a fan when he started doing clipless reviews.

Really? Wow.

I actually used to be a really big fan of his content. I would actually memorize parts of his reviews and recite them along with the videos when rewatching them. It was a big help with me, as it helped me conquer my speech impediment that I grew up with. And he served as the inspiration for me to start my own review channel.

Every day, I grow increasingly ashamed of this fact.

It’s one of those things I have, where I show interest in a certain fad, but after a month I lose interest. Happened to me for a month in that same year regarding Transformers Animated.

It’s also like a comedy series is base on reactions. And I’ve seen his stuff. It’s not as exaggerated as you think they are, at least not the way you’re describing it. He does have overreactions by the character the NC, but he’s also much more calm than the early years, and even show much less outrage at things that his old self would be screaming at.

And than comes a damning question: If you need to do a bunch of research to learn the story of a movie, doesn’t that make said movie bad, since it can’t even tell you the story it’s meant to tell? And even if that’s the case, it still make a connection to school and the concentration camps of WW2, intentionally or not, if Doug is correct.

I never got the hate for clipless reviews. I mean, I’ve watched and enjoyed the Midnight Screening videos, and they were also clipless, it’s just that Doug acts out the parts either due to copyright (The Phantom of the Opera review) or due to it being a new movie that uses nostalgic franchises/property (Jurassic World and Star Wars). And according to his commentary of his Pixels review, it’s his second most viewed video, meaning that he’s doing something right with it.

…You don’t. You literally don’t need to do a bunch of research. All I’d ask is for him to read one paragraph on the goddamn Wikipedia page to find out how personal the story behind The Wall really is.

He mocks “Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)” for critiquing the British education system (which Roger grew up in), yet the movie literally shows how bad the education was, how it was bent on beating the souls out of people and turning them into just… cogs in the machine. Another brick in the wall, if you will.

He refers to “Goodbye Blue Sky” as an Oscar bait song, when that makes no sense… The Wall was released as an album first. There wasn’t even originally a plan for a movie.

And he mocks all the WWII symbolism, when literally just watching the movie makes it abundantly clear why that was placed in there in the first place. Pink’s (and Roger’s) dad died in the war. He comes to view Nazis as this horrible thing, because it was the thing that took away his dad, and it becomes a symbol for everything he hates, until he finally goes insane and becomes the very thing that he hates. This is something that you don’t even have to do any research for. Just watch the goddamn movie.

Look, I get that you’re a fan of the Nostalgia Critic, and I understand why, but even good YouTubers have missteps sometimes.
