A movie that divides a fandom the way TLJ did isn’t safe. Snoke dying and the Rebels being decimated to less than 20 people are pretty big things in the movie. Luke being presented as a grumpy old recluse and failure was gonna upset people, that’s not safe.
 
A safe movie is Force Awakens, it doesn’t do anything controversial with its characters or setting and banks very hard on nostalgia with the OT. The scenario presented is more or less the same as the the OT.

Again, Lucas would likely cast aside the old EU worst than Disney, who just made it a separate continuity. And how about going “it’s not the outcome I like, so it’s shit,” you look at what it is and how it differs in a more objective light than just praising the original because you only remember the stuff you like and are quick to cry “non-canon” to anything less than perfect in your eyes.

I’ll grant you that FA was safer, but TLJ was still safe. Compare The Last Jedi to Star Wars the Clone Wars, it had an actual war and didn’t shy away from the more brutal and depressing aspects of war. By comparison, TLJ is kid friendly as fuck, now I don’t normally have a problem with that but if you start saying that this kid friendly movie that’s completely non-offensive to families is not safe? I’m gonna call bullshit

TLJ is more like fake risky.  
It looks like it’s trying to mix things to play around with the formula but then it just becomes a Star Wars at the end.  
To put it in an admittedly grossly simple way it’s spends much of its time saying “Star Wars is sooo stop: Rebels vs Empires Jedi vs Sith fate of the Galaxy what does it matter? Won’t someone please thing of the children!?” But then at the end it’s like “Yeah Star Wars! Good vs Evil! Fun adventures in space!”

Well gee, if your argument is “The Clone Wars tv show was REAL dark” then all the movies were safe, kid friendly fare by comparison.
 
Just cause something isn’t edgy doesn’t mean its safe.

Again, I don’t have a problem with movies being kid friendly. And I would say that Clone Wars was more mature than dark, and that’s what I wanted from TLJ if it was claiming to be different. I wanted it to be a mature movie…if we take away Fin and Poe’s arc then the movie almost achieves this with Rey’s arc…almost.

Yeah, or even a First Order Officer who says that there is no good or evil since those terms are subjective. He’ll say that while the First Order is a brutal autocratic Nightmare, it brings peace and stability to otherwise lawless worlds. Or even say how there were civilian contractors working on both Death Stars when they blew up and mention how many storm troopers and officers were really just average joes who joined the army

In the second Thrawn book that show Thrawn and Anikin met.  
They uncovered a Separatists operation mining cortosis (the element that can counter lightsaber blades) to make battle droids (and clone trooper armor for extra insurance for Order 66).  
At the end of the book when Anikin collapses the mine the cortosis causes the blast to go downwards hitting magma causing an eruption.  
Lava doesn’t hit the village the Separatists had enslaved but it does hit the it’s cropland and all the smoke and ash didn’t do them any favors.
 
Collateral damage. A planet full of people, just trying to live their lives. The kind of ordinary civilians she (Padmé) and Anakin had once dedicated themselves to protecting.
     Collateral damage. And it hadn’t started here, either. She’d been doing it ever since she arrived on Mokivj. She’d cajoled and bribed and all but insisted that LebJau and his friends work for her; that they risk everything for this stranger who’d dropped into their midst. 

         
     Collateral damage. Had she become so numbed and war-weary that she no longer even saw what she was doing to everyone else around her?

The exact status of the At-Pt’s in the old timeline is very inconsistent. Some reference guides like the essential guide to vehicles claimed that they were all stored aboard the katana fleet and lost until Thrawn attacked the new republic but games like the rogue squadron series showed that the empire had them in use. The same applies to dreadnaughts.
