Just checking in from my first view of the movie. Holy shitballs. A few parts kind of dragged, but most of it was done justice.
 
Oh my god! They killed Han! YOU BASTARDS!
 
Also How much of mass murder is it when you blow up a planet with 100 billion people on it like Coruscant?
 
I didn’t really understand why Kylo Ren called Vader “grandfather.” Just symbolic, perhaps? And how the hell was Finn so good with a goddamn lightsaber? That was a SITH LORD for christ’s sake!

Well, duh, Leia’s related to Luke, who are Anakin’s children and Kylo is Leia’s son, therefore, grandfather.

The Force Awakens is pretty good.
 
I would have liked if the plot was not so heavily derivative of A New Hope but if you’re going to rip off a movie it’s smart to at least rip off the original trilogy so you can’t be accused of being unfaithful to the series.
 
Rey learning the Force so quickly strains belief. In The Empire Strikes Back, Luke just grabbing his lightsaber in the ice cave was a major feat and here Rey learns enough in a couple hours without training to go toe to toe with Kylo. Then again, it’s basically a law that it takes a Jedi to fight a Sith and Rey is the only force sensitive on the good side.
 
I’m not sure how to feel about Han Solo’s death yet. Harrison Ford is getting too old for the part and he died a good death but I just don’t know. It takes time to process a shock like that.
 
Probably the part of the movie I enjoyed most is just that there is a decent Star Wars movie again. I like how it all looks and sounds. I can’t help but love the sound of blaster fire and lightsabers flaring to life. The crashed Star Destroyer on Jakku is a great set piece. There is not CGI crammed into every frame. I mean, of course there is CGI in the movie but it did not feel out of place or call attention to itself so I’m ok with it. I enjoyed immersing myself in the Star Wars universe again for a couple hours.
 
I want to see the next Star Wars movie be more of its own thing while still being in every sense Star Wars. That, I feel, will be its greatest challenge.

||They didn’t blow up Coruscant, but some discount Coruscant called Hosnian Prime. There would have been a lot more fanfare if they actually blew up Coruscant. Honestly, there should have been more of a reaction any who, but you know, Abrams. Nobody reacted to San Fransisco getting 9/11ed in ITD. Apparently the New Republic decided to distinguish itself from the corrupt Old Republic and the Galactic Empire by not setting up shop in Coruscant, but instead decided to rotate capitals based on elections. ||

Ohhh, OK. I was really worried there when I saw the shot of the whole population in a city that looked just like Coruscant looking up to see that giant ass red blast coming at them. I guess I was wrong though. I’m glad I’m wrong.

Anyone think for half a second that when Kylo Ren was removing his mask, it would actually end up being Jar Jar underneath?

I got confused there too. I don’t remember the movie giving the planet’s name and looked like Coruscant so I thought it was. Then I remembered Coruscant does not have moons.

I thought the planet was Coruscant as well. =/

The only CGI parts that I actually noticed as CGI and was rather “eehh%” about were: Those 3 creatures Han was carrying on his ship. They just looked a bit too… Obviously CGI. And the short lady with the goggles. Some of the close-ups on her broke the immersion a bit.
 
Yeah, while this movie was rather close to A New Hope, hopefully that was just to get the trilogy up and running, and we’ll have some more unique aspects in the next 2.
 
My predictions for events in the next one: We’re going to have Rey training under Luke, while Kylo is training under Snoke. So it could draw a parallel between the training in the Force under the Light, and the Dark.
 
Not quite sure what Finn would be up to. Since his story was about escaping the First Order, and that was pretty much accomplished by the end of the film. We know he’s good with a blaster and getting decent as a ship’s gunner. Perhaps he could become a leader among the resistance’s ground forces. Training them to counter First Order tactics and such, since he has first-hand knowledge. Or he could even get a story arc where he tries to liberate more Stormtroopers.
 
But who knows% Aside from people who have access to spoilers. but I don’t wanna hear that! D=

Ok, the CGI on the tentacle monsters could have been better. Their design was suitably horrific though.
 
The training parallels between Rey and Kylo is a good idea. I want to learn just who Snoke is.
 
I predict Finn becomes a fighter pilot under Poe.

Given that the Empire has a fetish for superweapons it’s understandable for the NR to keep rotating their capital to keep shit like what happens in the movie from being too crippling.

Saw the movie. General Hux’s speech was better in the original British

They are cheaper from globalism but wages are also depressed and other bad things too so it balances out

Episode VII did enough by establishing the current state of things; let’s hope Episode VIII develops everything a bit more though.
