|| I think that’s probably the point. Between his tantrums, out bursts, and strange obsessions he’s not meant to be the super threatening one. He’s the swayed pawn being pulled down the dark path, his obsessions being manipulated by a much more powerful, malevolent force. Snoke is the big bad in all this. At the end where Snoke says it’s time for his training to be complete tells me that he’ll come back as a much, much more formidable foe the next time.

And Finn only held him off to a degree, he never really wounded him. This was also after Kylo took a bow caster round (which is a hell of a thing to be hit by) to the side and escaped an exploding station, he wasn’t in the best of shape. When he betrayed and killed his fellow students it was probably a surprise attack when he was at his strongest and when they were vulnerable. ||

addendum

|| He’s basically Kuja from Final Fantasy 9. An outwardly calm and arrogant bastard with daddy issues and a superiority complex who simultaneously wants to both prove himself to and get back at his family. And, just like Kuja, when his narrative is challenged he flies into a childlike tantrum. He’s immature, emotional, arrogant, childish, and yet fairly powerful. He’s actually pretty interesting if you think about it. ||

|| Again, I feel like that’s the point. He’s basically an ascended fanboi, so he’s going to try super hard to emulate his idols. He’s not supposed to be the calm, stable, collected villain. He’s driven by obsession, passion, and mental issues. He wants to be as strong as his grandfather and uncle, Snoke twisted his passions just like the Dark Side is supposed to. The result isn’t a mentally stable tactical genius but an obsessed, petulant manchild wanting to “prove” himself. I think it’s pretty interesting myself. He’s not just doing it for the evils, and he doesn’t have some grand cliched scheme. He’s just guy with family issues who let someone far more intelligent and dangerous control him.

It’s what Anakin should have been in the prequels. You actually kinda understand what drove Ben to being Kylo, wherein with Anakin’s fall to the darkside was “well, he had this personality trait and got this girl knocked up.||

No, you liked the worldbuilding, sense of grandeur, and the art direction.

When Padme and Anakin are your focus characters, you really can’t objectively call them good individual movies :/

True, I had forgotten him Tanking that shot. And they did set up throughout the movie how much of a freaking beast you’d need to be to not go flying back. And he was just knocked to his Knee.

Some of my dislike of him could be from his actions wit pops.

And I think I was placing some of my grumblings on the First Order onto him as well.

I did enjoy him throughout the movie. I also liked him being not a calm and reserved master or anything. His sudden outbursts of anger and violence is threatening. Since you are wary of what would set him off. ||

Hmmm… Here’s a question:
|| Anyone else have the feeling that Rey is Luke’s daughter?

Especially since Luke’s Lightsaber gave her all those Force!Visions.

I never looked much into the EU, and I know this movie isn’t following that. But I do remember something about Luke having a daughter, and her being strong in the Force.

@Zincy
I’d say that the Revenge of the Sith novelization and the clone wars series were pretty good in showing how Anakin fell.

@Darth Sonic
Yeah, they were good for showing the glory of the Republic before it fell and how corrupt the Old Jedi Order were in the end. Also I actually liked the prequels, except 2 though that’s more of wasted potential there.
Red Anon

@Zebasiz
Luke had a son in the EU, it was Han and Leia who a twin daughter and son.
Pretty sure Kylo/Ben is supposed to be Jacen Solo there. Hell I thought Rey was Jaina for the first half of the movie at the time. Plus, they’re not exactly being subtle with the hints of Luke being Rey’s dad.

So
I just watched the Force Awakes like and hour ago.
The movie is good, but to be honest, I was expecting more about it. The massive hype that surrounds the movie, with the commercials and merch ruined it for me, making me think it was an awesome big movie.

It doesn’t not compare to the classic ones to be honest. The movie series used everything they needed to use, and this movie just remade everything again. You can call it “tribute” or whatever, I call it “refrito” and a boring one, like Rocky, too many movies can ruin the series. The only shocking thing that surprised me a bit was when Snape kills Dumbledore, yes that was shocking.

6.5/10 not better than the other movies

Squiggy = Best Boyfriend
I thought it was great
Arguably half this movie is just redoing A New Hope, but I enjoy the new elements and characters

I can see why people may not like Kylo Ren after his character is truly shown, but I think he’s certainly interesting
I’d rather he be who he is rather than just another Darth Vader

did nothing wrong
@Red Anon

It isn’t just half or 70% - they essentially took A New Hope’s script and shamelessly swapped out plot points and characters - knowing it wouldn’t matter because people would be frothing at the mouth to see a new Star Wars regardless.

I saw this coming but not like this.

Edit: nevermind, just saw where you pointed this out a day ago.

We’re still in a movie high essentially at the moment. Given some time the general public can judge the more objectively.

Might as well give a review while I’m here anyway. As I said in previous posts while I like it, I still feel there’s a lot of wasted potential that could have been done. One idea could have been shortening the hunt for Luke to a couple of scenes, and make it the focus of Episode VIII. Another would be the introduction of Starkiller base being quite early in the film or even in the opening text crawl,and the climax with both Starkiller Base severely damaged or destroyed could have been placed in Episode IX and Han Solo’s death given more focus than what was given. Given that the movie tried to cram in to many ideas for the given time frame it all felt to jumbled.

The new guys were in general done well, though Rey felt a bit of having been to good in what she did. While both Phasma and Poe should have had more scenes given, as it stands the dynamics with Finn and Poe were fantastic and felt a lot like Han and Luke were like in the OT at times. The First Order’s stormtroopers generally being more incompetent and acted like how the general perception of stormtroopers are of being unable to hit the broad side of a barn rather than the professional soldiers they were. The Resistance on the other was given to little focus compared to the Rebellion though it may grow in time. Also there’s hardly felt a need for there to be a Yoda expy at the moment, she seems superfluous and only served to give an. The sets are done quite well and both props and costumes were beautiful with many details hidden within the film. The music was well done though it felt overdone at times while watching it. The designs while it felt sincere in the attempt, much was pretty much a copy or updated designs of A New Hope, with what I feel was some of the worst being the new star destroyer and the resistance lander.

Overall the film was a solid 7/10 with the first viewing being great but it wont pull you in for a second or third time as it all acted like it was done before.

Saw it, waited to see something new and was unimpressed. Rather than a new Star Wars film we just got a slightly rehashed series of events from the trilogy and a lot of plotlines outright stolen from the Expanded Universe. The end result was all flash and zero substance - a film reliant upon its hype and milking nostalgia to make back its cash rather than actual quality. Honestly, this film is the equivalent of a student handing in an essay he’s ripped directly from Wikipedia and presenting it as his own work. Much as I hate to say it, this genuinely made me a little more forgiving towards Michael Bay’s Transformers series.

Personally, i’d rate this 0/10 given it had little to nothing new to actually offer. Even what little it has is overshadowed by the shameless sequel baiting and desperate plugs for new productions with their cash cow.

It failed spectacularly though, because the Republic is incapable of being competent for more than like 2 years at a time.

This is why I always supported the Galactic Empire. Bringing peace and stability to a war ravaged galaxy.

While the hero’s plot armor did keep the Storm Troopers from doing much damage to them, I did like some of the little things we saw with them.
Getting to see them actually engage and take out a few settlements was good to see. As we can see them actually terrorizing people.

Their little skirmish at the beginning of the film and then us seeing them perform bombing runs and aerial attacks before sending in ground troops like at the bar at least showed them being professional.

And we got to see a bit more personality with them. With some having specialized weapons, or hearing them shout orders to eachother during the battles.

Plus, finding out how the First Order actually gets these troops and trains them was neat to find out. [I was wondering if the Empire had some sort of masterful PR campaign we never saw or something~]
So I appreciated those little touches and glimpses we saw. And since the movie isn’t focused on them, I felt it an appropriate amount of attention.

|| I agree on feeling a little iffy on Rey becoming so good at things so quickly. I know the plot point is that she’s Super Duper strong in the force. But it still felt rather rushed.

Her picking up on flying the Falcon I could accept, given she was already familiar with mechanics and we’ve seen both Anakin and Luke pick up on flying extremely well.

But her so quickly picking up on the Mind Trick and Force Grab abilities [even just rushed, raw, and not actually skilled yet] felt like a bit too much. I could understand her reversing the Mind Reading when she did since Kylo was actively doing it to her. So she could feel out what he was doing and just try and mentally reverse it.||

On a similar note: I did like how Finn was shown to not be experienced with several of the things he was trying to do. [Taking a ship gunner position] But he wasn’t stupid about it. I’m not quite sure I’m expressing myself properly here.

I liked that we saw him slowly progress in figuring these things out. First in the Tie-fighter where Boe tells him what to push and how to control the gun. Then in the Falcon he had a vague idea what he was supposed to do now. And so was able to figure it out after a bit of trial and error.

I was also REALLY happy they didn’t try the plot where he constantly tries to “protect” Rey because of some misguided hero feelings or because she’s a woman or anything. When he kept grabbing her hand I was afraid they’d go that route. But thankfully they moved past that without making it a big deal or a moment or anything.

I was going to argue with you on the FO’s stormtroopers but what you said makes sense. Though I believe that they had either stole the kids when they’re raiding nearby systems or they have more planets where they can conscript through force or by making the parents give them ‘willingly’. Though if we take the idea that both Kylo Ren’s men and those guarding the base were the elites I’d say they are poorly trained for what they do. As was shown during the capture of Tantive IV and the assault on Hoth the stormtroopers under Vader’s command excelled beautifully.
