He did become nicer later in Fleetway’s run, but it was still a little bit much.
 
And the still ongoing fan continuation of STC made him much nicer in general as well.

I despise his Fleetway version. It makes him VERY unlikable. And that’s not to mention the extreme edge levels the later issues hit.

The second trailer (design issue aside) actually did make the movie look better, and funnier then the previous trailer.  
Green Hill Zone looked beautiful especially.

Yeah… Some claim STC’s adaptations were more accurate then Archie’s, but I honestly disagree… (Especially, with Archie’s later issues which were pretty accurate.)  
Archie’s Sonic Adventure adaptation, despite it’s problems at least had a more accurate Perfect Chaos, and such.  
(It’s surprising Sega of Europe didn’t care about that.)

Yeah, in fact, STC was actually much more darker, and edgier then the Archie or SatA.M. series ever was. In fact, STC is basically considered the darkest official Sonic canon.  
Some prefer it, because of that, but I think it just lacked the whimsy, the heart, and humor the other canons had.
 
I also wasn’t too big on most of STC’s OCs… Johnny Lightfoot, and Porker Lewis just didn’t seem as likeable, or amusing as Sally, the Freedom Fighters, or the game characters to me. Robotnik’s lacky Grimer was just a more Grinch-looking version of Snively, only not as amusing, and lacking the second-banana-with-motives Starscream-qualities that made Snively more interesting.  
Plus some like the “Marxio Brothers” were kinda pure cringe. (They would’ve been ok for one gag issue, but they seriously made them recurring characters, and even had them part of the plotlines, and such. Archie at least usually ditched it’s lame gag characters, or made them more interesting.)

The ironic thing is that the jokes work BECAUSE of the new design. The only thing that was changed in the definitive Movie is Sonic’s design, but the scripts will be the same ones. If they kept that old ugly design and made the same jokes, it would have been super lame.

While I honestly didn’t loathe the old design like the entire universe, I will admit the new friendlier design works better with the one-liners, and it is easier on the eyes. He looks more like Sonic now.
 
I’m also glad they didn’t copy his exact game design like I feared they would. The uni-eyes, and longer/skinnier limbs would look worse in live-action to me. It’s better they mixed the game design with an new original design, it also kinda sets the movie a li’l apart from the game canon.

You know, if they ever wanted to bring back the Hyper Sonic transformation without bringing back the Super Emeralds (since the reason they got rid of those was for the sake of “streamlining” and making the Chaos Emerald lore and number more consistent), they could make it triggered by the Master Emerald (perhaps it unleashes some kind of pulse that increases the power of the Chaos Emeralds).

I know. We’ve established that the Master Emerald can neutralize the power of the Chaos Emeralds, so who’s to say that it can’t also do the reverse and power them up?
 
Plus, the Master Emerald triggering transformations has precedence in the franchise (most notably Mecha Sonic gaining a super form in the final boss battle against him in a Knuckles playthrough of S3&K).

It is pretty interesting how the design with the only thing that changed about sonic as even the animation for him was different (well the trailers made it seem different at the very least)

And apparently the scenes from the first trailer with the old design was all that had been completed for his animation at that point, so that probably also helped.

With the Archie series canned, I’m honestly going to miss Scourge.
 
I know some hate him for being a “recolor,” (which makes sense seeing as he’s basically an A.U. evil version of Sonic) but as I said before, frankly I like him better as a “recolor with a new wild personality, whom is an actual villainous threat,” (technically he is the only legit evil hedgehog) as opposed to him originally being a blue “samecolor” as Sonic, with a similar-yet-evil personality, whom used to be easily defeated.  
(Before being renamed/redesigned into Scourge, he used to be Evil Sonic.)
