Because of it’s pacing? Because we have to remember that the volume was a recovery arc of sorts

I felt like nothing really happened. I mean the big climax was focused on Nora and Ren, who are to be fair secondary characters.

Putting the spotlight on secondary characters is all well and good. But what lasting, permanent changes were brought about by the events of Vol. 4? And just for the record, I don’t consider the audience learning information to qualify as an event.

With all the threads I’m seeing in fan pages I follow one would think that Pyrrha’s death is the first time a lot of people have been exposed to permanent main character death in anime, if not fiction in general.

4 Hunters In-Training managed to beat a legendary Grimm? One that has killed a few full-fledged Hunters before then?

I think it works wonderfully in MLP, as it’s a episodic show mostly allergic to arcs. RWBY on the other hand is pretty much entirely arc driven, and when secondary characters team up to fight a tertiary villain, it’s easy to ask “Who cares?” and “Does this matter in any way to the actual main story?”.
 
It would have worked better if it had been halfway through, rather than at the climax. I felt that gave it a sense of importance that it couldn’t live up to.

You have a good point. I personally agree with DirtyBit that this was something of a “breather” volume (whether one thinks we actually needed a breather after the emotional impact of Volume Three is moot at this point), so I’m definitely looking forward to more…everything happening in Volume Five.
 
Because, let’s face it, Yang and Weiss got kinda shafted this Volume.

Ironically, their arcs were my favorite. I mean, Weiss gaining the resolve to leave her douchebag father behind? Yang overcoming her trauma and getting a new arm in the process? That’s a lot more gripping than Blake or Ruby’s arcs.
 
I really didn’t like the bait and switch in Blake’s (where the White Fang there were also evil, wasted opportunity there) and Ruby’s barely did anything (you could probably get the same outcome if Ruby and Co. hitchiked and Qrow was piss-drunk and got a hangover.)

I’m curious as to what event could be so earth-shattering that it would necessitate two whole extra episodes to cover it in full.

We only saw Nuck destroy a few villages, with one of them not having Huntsmen and the other being fresh after a bandit attack and with only one Huntsman protecting it. And it was hardly “legendary”, just old enough to be connected to Ren’s backstory.  
That was arguably the biggest problem with it- it wasn’t overwhelmingly strong, but it was smart enough to pick its targets and only strike when it saw an opportunity, and also adapt to the opponents tactics. Which, if I remember correctly, was stated to be the chief reason why older Grimm are so troubling.
 
Also, I like how people always make it sound like RNJR had no problem fighting Nuck, when Ren and Nora were both depleted of Aura, meaning they would’ve died if they were smacked once more. Apperantly, only death in the team counts as “challenging fight”.

Maybe they just got a bigger budget and are now allowed to flesh some things out more.

I wouldn’t go death in team counts an challenging. I mean, they could’ve knocked out Ruby and Jaune mid-battle.

Interesting. From her more playful tone from when she said “You are in so much trouble,” I would’ve assumed that Yang chose to chase after Ruby over her mother. But then again, this wouldn’t be the first time I’ve been wrong about this sort of thing.

You know, I was doing some thinking, and I think part of the reason Vol. 4 felt so poorly paced was because nearly every other week a World of Remnant episode was being inserted in between the “real” episodes. I hope that doesn’t happen with this season.
