So do the Tapus, Type: Null, and Silvally count as Legendaries then? Because they’re marked differently in the Alola Pokedex than other Legendaries.

@Jarkes

The Tapus are legendaries, of that I’m sure.

Normally, I would not have called Type:Null and Silvally legendaries on account of being part of an evolutionary chain, but in light of Solgaleo and Lunala both evolving from Cosmog, that’s less diagnostic, at least as far as Alolan Pokemon go.

As far ingame mechanics goes, Silvally is an evolution of Type:Null. But as far as lore goes, Type:Null and Silvally are considered the same Pokemon.

Type:Null was just a Silvally that was given a restrictive helmet by the Aether Foundation. The game even says so. Plus Type:Null’s stats are near identical to Silvally’s (minus the speed since the helmet slows it down) and Type:Null’s cry is near identical to Silvally (but it’s muffled due to the helmet).

And while the anime often takes liberties from the games, Silvally’s "evolution" wasn’t like how normal Pokemon evolve in the anime. No glows or sparkles or it changing in shape or size. Just it breaking free from that restrictive helmet.

Yep. Even their different names have explinations. The creature was made by Team Aether and was originally called Type:Full. But after it was considered to be a failure, they called it Type:Null instead. Silvally was the name Gladion gave it.

I’m honestly surprised Silvally wasn’t a form change but since a lot of form changes tend to be temporary and because they wanted the helmet to come off when Null was well bonded with its trainer with a high friendship stat, I guess they figured it would have been best to make it an evolution instead mechanically.
