Sweet F.A.
I just saw the new Muse concert film from their Drones Tour. It was… eh?
Now, I am a huge Muse fan, but I’m especially a fan of their live concerts. However, this one seemed off. Very overproduced. There were a lot of post-production video effects added, like CGI, color correction—some of the video clips were even flipped—and it was just like, what’s the point? It did nothing to enhance the video, just giving it a plastic, fake quality that pulled me out of the moment every time.
Another thing I noticed was the inconsistency of the setlist. They cut out a noticeable number of songs, only having Matt play piano on one song, and it kept jumping back and forth between their political hard rock songs and poppier jams like “Starlight.” Which in a way kind of echoes a problem I currently have with Muse: It seems like they don’t know whether they want to be a rock band or a pop band.
If you know me, you would know that I’d heavily prefer the former. I like when Muse rocks out. I’m still hopeful for the upcoming Album #8, especially since I enjoyed Drones, I just hope they know what they’re doing.
