Metroid series discussion

It just seems so arbitrary. Because it meant that most enemies lunged at you. I hope the next 2D game removes it. But keeps the manual aiming. That was a really good addition.

Also I do really enjoy it and I think it’s a good 8/10, but I rank it under fusion and Zero Mission for 2D Metroids. (also AM2R but I guess since it’s a fan game it shouldn’t count.)

Ok so playing through SR again, the level design is pretty damn good, it has a lot of Metroidvania elements in the individual areas, despite being artificially gated off of later areas, Sakamoto took the original and much like AM2R did a lot to add shortcuts and use of new powers to go back to previously explored areas. Overall the level design is probably an 8/10 for metroidvania design. I hope the next 2D game goes back to the design of Super and current Metroidvanias where the path to the next area is blocked by an out of reach ledge or similar, and not purple acid or a locked security gate.

In fairness, being blocked by acid was how it was in the original Gameboy game. While I love the Gameboy game, (in some ways it aged better then the previous NES game) the 3DS remake does improve alot of things.
 
Wish Nintendo would rerelease the squishy Metroid Amiibo though. I wanna squeeze it.

I was using the acid as an example of artificially blocking the player from further areas. You have no way to go forward but to perform prerequisites to drain the acid. Whereas in like Super Metroid, you’re soft blocked from Kraids lair because you’re supposed to get the high jump boots. But you can sequence break by wall jumping up without them.

Yeah, sequence breaking can be fun/rewarding. Zero Mission’s developers actually intentionally put in places like that where you could do that.

How AM2R and Samus Returns remade Metroid 2 | Game Maker’s Toolkit  
Great video but I feel like he sells Samus Returns a bit short here.

And beat the diggernaut on Hard mode. He does a lot of damage so you have to avoid taking hits period more or less. I had 7 tanks and he kills me in two hits.

Feels like a homage to the Prime series, with the Spider Ball tracks and Bomb slots as part of the battle.

Yeah, also I’m at Proteus Ridley now.

I was thinking about the chozo memories at the end of Samus Returns and I think the next 2D Metroid might have you fight that evil faction of chozo shown in the one that says 2d/10

That would be interesting.

Y’know I don’t get why Sakamoto says Prime is self contained when he put Ridley with armor plating at the end of SR that looks similar to Omega Ridley in Prime 3. And Ridley is known to be able to regenerate himself. It is most definitely a bridge between Prime and the 2d games.

He probably just changed his mind. And let’s face it, there’s always been some inconsistencies here and there with Metroid lore.

Yeah.

I’ve been playing Fusion Mode NG+ in AM2R. It’s great. Very challenging, too. Everything does 4x as much damage as normal and has hard mode AI. Organic enemies sometimes drop X parasites. Also some bosses become core X. And the lava is drained up to area 6.

I finished AM2R on Fusion now.
