Zelda 2 is probably one of the few rare cases where the American version of the game is better then the Japanese version. From the multi-colored dungeons, (they were almost all the same color in the Japanese version) to the new bosses.
The only unimprovement is requiring the fire attack to kill some enemies like Tektites, but on the other hand, it gives the power a reason to exist.
Oddly, despite the Famicom Disk System, having better sound quality, the music was actually better in the American NES version. The boss music was shorter, and repeated the same few notes too much for example. The Japanese battle stage theme is pretty good though, and was reused in “Minish Cap.” (Though, the American one is catchy too.)
While the Nintendo Switch’s current online subscription service has proved quite controversial, especially for those that feel NES games aren’t good compensation for it, interestingly, fans have discovered a way (without hacking, or anything technical) to play the Japanese Famicom versions of the games, making this the first time the Japanese versions were officially available to American gamers.
