I mean, it’s about a girlfriend for rent. Plus, the wiki makes it sound like it’s a guy who is probably in a bad place in his life (he’s renting a girlfriend) surrounded by potentially problematic or abusive characters.
 
Of course, that’s a very surface-level read. (I’m literally going off the wiki.) But even if it is problematic, it’s not to say it’s going to be bad. Lots of great anime are problematic. My top 2 shows for my year (O Maidens, Stars Align) are massively problematic. Just sayin’, the trailer looks cute but the wiki makes it seem more problematic.

So I’m finally buying titles from RightStuf for their yearly sale. It feels more complicated this time since I have to see if the FUNi titles are on my boycott list.

Hey, it’s one of the main places I get my titles from. I know it’s supplied at least three quarters of what I own in the last decade.

It’s literally the only thing I know about you. I have no idea what your tastes or standards are like because you don’t actually talk about them. I’ve been making passive-aggressive rants in Derpibooru for 7 years, man. I know what you’re doing.
 
Scrabbleman just did something like this a few pages ago. You’re not interested in talking about anime as much as you are airing out this pathetic grievance of yours. (Except yours is even less significant, and his complaint had some merit, yours has none.) I knew it’d happen again, but I thought it would be at least a couple of months.
 
 
I don’t understand why y’all are like this. I’m fairly cognisant of the issues in the industry and the fandom, and I probably watch more “political” anime than anyone here. But even I don’t like to get political, and I don’t expect others would want to read about my politics either. I only respond in this manner to someone else bringing it up, because someone has to.
 
Like, y’all even tried to make KyoAni burning down political. Why do y’all do this?

 
Anyways, finally got around to starting Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru aka Oregairu aka My Teenage Romcom SNAFU.
 
The show starts with the usual “I’m too mature for high school” speech a lot of these back-row-seat protags make, and it’s immediately ripped apart by an actual adult. Just beautiful.
 
I really enjoyed this early takedown of an angsty Nice Guy(tm), but I also appreciate that they framed his cynicism as a result of his life’s circumstances. Makes him more believable and a bit more sympathetic.
 
The core three’s first interactions were really sharp, cutting through ideas that other shows might take entire episodes to unwrap. And I like the begrudging mutual respect they have for each other, sharing their personal struggles so the others might learn from them. They’re not exactly friends yet, but they understand why their teacher put them in this club; they might be good for each other.
 
I like characters who are inwardly focused and self-analyzing, and I’m a huge sucker for stories about how we’re all damaged in different ways. Hachiman and Yukino are both reasonable people, but his emotional immaturity causes him to form a superiority complex, while her insularity and inexperience with dealing with others causes her to project impossible standards onto others. Really compelling dynamic, and it could be fun watching them fuck up and learn from their mistakes.
 
 

 
Nitpicks: Yukino’s VA clearly out-acts Hachiman’s in some spots which took away from their back-and-forth a bit, and Yui is literally introduced tits-first. But it’s alright. Yukino’s intro was very reminiscent of Hyouka and thought that was a damn high star for a romcom to aiming for, but this is a really good start.

I barely remember Oregairu except that I really liked it. I can’t remember why I liked it, but yeah.

I noticed RightStuf doesn’t have any sales on their Discotek stuff this year. Which sucks since I was hoping to get some of the Lupin specials finally. I picked up Part IV during their sale last year.

Anime over the 2010s

Wow, nearly 1/3 of that is devoted to Gintama, and the anime didn’t even start in the 2010s.

Found a really interesting manga. It’s called Marine Corps Yumi.
 

 
It’s a story about a Japanese high school graduate joining the US Marines to achieve her dream of becoming President of the United States. It’s written by a Japanese-US Marine veteran too.
 
It’s cute and fun, and it really does show how difficult it is to be a Marine, especially as a woman. Also, a really interesting fact about the MC Yumi; she was born in Hawaii, which gives her dual-citizenship. But what’s the most interesting about this is that the not-yet-President Reagan and his wife Nancy Davis was nearby and apparently helped Yumi’s mom when in labor and even got a helicopter ride to the hospital. So Yumi was blessed by Ronald Reagen.

Finished Tada Never Falls In Love and episode 9 of Demon Slayer.
 
Tada was mostly pretty good, but the last few episodes were amazing. I’m a big fan of romance, and this definitely delivered on that front. I was pretty worried that it wouldn’t have a happy ending, but thankfully it did. Charles was my favourite character, by far - he was very likeable, and the way he was willing to let go of his love for Teresa just to make her happy actually brought me to tears.
 
Demon Slayer is as great as always. The fight scene in this episode was probably the best yet (as a sidenote, holy shit does this show have amazing visuals), and it looks like it isn’t quite over yet. I love how much personality the demons have.
 
Next up is DARLING in the FRANXX. Spin.moe actually picked O Maidens in Your Savage Season to be my next show, but it has a dub coming out soon, so I’ll wait for that.

I liked the peak into what Gacchan is thinking in the middle of competition.
 
This was a nice depiction of the sort of camaraderie and mutual respect in sports and afterschool clubs. It doesn’t need to super dramatic and ambitious like Stars Align. This totally works, too.
