I can enjoy wish fulfillment shows.

This one was just crap.
My main issue was just that the main character himself doesn’t care.
He has, like, zero emotion or reactions to the things around him. Just: “Oh a thing? K I’ll use my phone with some spells annnd done. Anyone else need something?”
I can be fine with him being overpowered and the whole harem thing. But it’s his utter lack of caring about anything happening around him that gets me.
He doesn’t have any set goal. He doesn’t have anything he wants that he’s going for. He doesn’t even seem to care about the 10+ women who fell in love with him and want to be his bride. He just goes through things.
Heck he sounds bored half the time. “Oh, massive army of undead that have this tower surrounded? Just a moment. [few seconds later they’re all dead] Alright, took care of that for you.”
“Turn off your brain and just watch” is, like, How Not to Summon a Demon Lord. This was just bad. And I’m someone who’s INANELY forgiving with bad anime.

And that’s Azumanga Daioh done.
I had a lot of fun with this. There wasn’t much in the way of story, but pretty much all the characters (with one or two exceptions) were great - especially Osaka and Yukari.
What surprised me most about this show was the quality of the English dub - from what I’m reading, the quality of dubs in the early 2000s was still hit or miss, and AzuDa’s dub still holds up well today imo (especially Osaka).
Next up is Tamako Market.

Azumanga Daioh is the picture of character driven, there was no specific lead up to Chiyo’s standing ovation but it carries the weight of so much, showing us how far Tomoko has come in her own way and making it so the last day of Chiyo’s time at school was a very beautiful one,

Gonna go ahead and say that if you have to “turn your brain off” to enjoy a thing, the thing isn’t actually good. Like, you can enjoy a show despite its flaws, but pretending those flaws don’t exist is not really a smart way to engage art or media.

I’ve said it before but I’ll happily say it again. It’s okay to like flawed shows. You (I mean anyone in this board reading this) are an adult, you should be able to look at any piece or art or media and determine what elements of it resonates with you and what doesn’t, regardless of how popular it is or the popular perception of the show is. You don’t need to accept everything about a show for your feelings about it to be valid.
Similarly, you shouldn’t assume that when other people like a flawed show, they like it specifically for the bad or problematic thing. Sometimes they do (let’s be real), but not always. It’s not a matter taste, it’s a mentality. How they (and you) look at a piece of art matters.
