General Anime Thread

I’m not fond of how they sped past acquiring Shield Hero’s newest member.

 
O Maidens ep 3. This show is mostly having fun with its characters’ awkwardness, but it also loves to remind you of how little the world cares about their feelings. Hurts so good.
 
There are hints of some anime romance tropes that I’m not usually fond of, but the show has executed its problematic premise very well so far, so maybe those will turn out fine.
 
 

 
Granbelm ep 3. Complications.
 
More characters and their motivations are introduced. Not explored as in-depth as the main character’s yet, but a lot happened this ep. Really good storyboarding that framed each character and relationship differently.
 
The fight scenes are a bit lacking in oomph, but the character writing is good enough to carry this show.

Even classic “evil” traits have been discovered to be mental disorders: narcissistic personality disorder, borderline personality disorder, sociopathy.

Again, you are just assuming he is mentally ill, which is an unsafe assumption to make. Only about 5% of violent acts can be attributed to individuals living with a serious mental illness. In fact, people with severe mental illnesses are over 10 times more likely to be victims of violent crime than the general population. (My emphasis.)
 
It’s logical and convenient to assume that unthinkable acts can only be committed by people who have lost their minds, but that is not the reality we occupy. Most of these acts are committed by people who are mentally healthy.

You can try to make sense of the murderer’s actions if you want, I’d rather think about KyoAni.

Symphogear ep 3. Bit of a breather relative to the first two eps.
 
Chris’ and Shirabe’s transformations were good, but I wouldn’t put it above the first two. I do appreciate that they kept the “BANG” from Chris’ S2 transformation.
 
The family angle for the villains is standard for this series, but I don’t mind. I also like that some lesser evils from the first four seasons are being framed as greater evils this season. Could be interesting or it could be dumb, it can go either way with this series.

I wish I knew, man. People are very messy and confusing.
 
I understand the desire to make sense of the situation, and the logic isn’t unfounded. I don’t have a recent study in front of me, but I believe about 10% of psychotic patients exhibit violent behavior, compared to I think 2% of the general public. But if you try to work backwards, i.e. start with a violent act and look at the person committing it, the logic doesn’t hold.
 
I mean, you could be right, the arsonist could be clinically insane. It’s not impossible, just statistically unlikely. But I am not actually trained in this stuff, I just have close friends who are and work with crazy people every day and we talk about it a lot. It’s why I know these numbers. But why clinically sane people might behave this way is beyond me.

Everything that CNN has said about KyoAni is accurate. They do employ more women than your average anime studio, in a notoriously shitty industry that does need them. There’s nothing political about what they reported. You are making it political because of your biases.

Aikatsu Friends ep 66. This week’s ep was about how everyone loves Wakaba.
 
That’s it, that’s the ep but it’s great. A novel take on the “imitation” archetype that’s so often used for antagonists. Had great scenes with the main characters mentoring younger characters, a very rewarding thing to see in longer titles.
 
 

 
Re:Stage ep 3. Despite a few questionable elements, this was a fun ep.
 
Don’t like the show reducing a character’s attributes to RPG stat lines. This ep also reminds of one of the negative themes of BokuBen, the idea that you have a duty to persue what you have an affinity for.
 
But the new girl is a bokukko, so it’s fine. I really liked her backstory, although I don’t know how much they can get out of her character gimmick. Kae’s gimmick is great, though.

Whenever I start to feel grateful for this thread, that it’s a bastion from all the bullshit in the Western anime fandom, someone always comes along and ruins it. It’s why I’m angry all the time.

I just finished watching episode 1 of Little Witch Academia. Akko and Lotte are so cute.

22/7 anime is coming 2020.
 
It’s probably not going to have the same staff as the slice-of-life shorts, and the performances will definitely be CG because they already have the models, but it’ll be nice to see Horiguchi’s designs in a 2D anime again.

Tagaki-san S2E3. Main pair go on a date.
 
Still consistently fun. Takagi trying to get Nishikata to be more honest was nice. A little frustrated at the end, when the show decided to maintain the status quo rather than having even a little bit of development. That’s how these shows go.
 
 
Also caught up with Nagatoro-san. Legit development! Only took, like, 40 chapters.
 
If Takagi-san can get two seasons, why not Nagatoro-san.
