General Anime Thread

 
Hyouka ep 19. Romance stories are often built around moments where characters fall in love, or at least gaining a better understanding of the people they care about. These moments are special because they’re rare, characters can rarely stand to be in them for long. Self-contained romances spend their last moments there, dive in, and end. Serial romances go back and forth forever. Hyouka opts to revel in these moments.
 
I loved Eru straight-up asking Hotaro out. I like her actively pushing their relationship forward, while clearly feeling the weight of their mutual feelings. She seems more like she’s playing around with Hotaro in this ep, humoring him out of fondness and for her own entertainment. Hotaro has been pretty much playing his role in the group and the self-serious lazy guy, and seeing Eru riff on this the way Satoshi and Mayaka do shows how much he’s affected her. I also appreciate Hyouka being more subtle with the characters blushing.
 
As Hotaro proposed their little game, you just knew it was going to backfire on him. The show goes out of its way to frame them on equal levels in this game, and the way they played off each other was great. I love where their relationship has gone. Eru had always taken Hotaro’s gift seriously, even when he didn’t. He still doesn’t, but he’s more conscious of her feelings now. Her actions cause him to be more mindful of his words and deeds. Instead of just explaining his magic trick afterwards, he invites her on his journey and explains himself as he goes along, keeping her on board and even asking for her input. He means more to her now.
 
I also loved the long string of cute faces and and flirty moments during the whole ep. These two have so much romantic chemistry it’s almost criminally adorable.

That perspective makes me feel like the guy who peeping behind that ladder watching a sweet ship unfolding.

So, here is my initial preseason watch list for Summer 2019. Above-average number of Cute Girls Doing Stuff this season.
 
Symphogear S5: Might not even get licensed.  
Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san S2: S1 was okay.
 
Araburu Kisetsu no Otome-domo yo: Teenagers who want to have sex. Manga is by Okada Mari, so it might actually be legit.  
Dumbbell Nan Kilo Moteru: Girls weightlifting.  
Machikado Mazoku: Kirara magical girl show.  
Joshikousei no Mudazukai: CGDCT.  
Grandbelm: Girls in mechs.  
Sounan desu ka: Four girls are stranded on a deserted island after surviving a plane crash. Short-form.  
Enen no Shouboutai (Fire Force): I liked most of Soul Eater, and the PV looks real good, so why not.  
Re:Stage Dream Days: Idol anime. It’s sure to disappoint.

Dr. Stone: Another Shounen Jump hit. Curious premise that hints it might get away from constant action, but I’m not fond of the designs.  
Vinland Saga: Gritty action show by Wit.  
To the Abandoned Sacred Beasts: Gritty action show by MAPPA. Not really into gritty action, hence why these are Maybes.  
Kanata no Astra: Space drama. Director Masaomi Andou seems to have a positive rep, even though I’m not directly familiar with his work.  
Cop Craft: Buddy cop comedy with a robot girl.

Let’s see if I’m right.

I’ve watched two seasons of Familiar of Zero and I will say the worst part of the show is Scarron. His character basically boils down to “Ha ha, gay people are funny”. It is the only thing of Familiar of Zero I don’t like. The constant jokes of him trying to kiss or get close to men is extremely outdated, unfunny, and kind of homophobic.

Okay, so I have a question.
 
Bakugo has been nothing but a malicious asshole this entire series, he has straight-up attempted to kill Deku, and now he has admitted his intent to kill Uraraka (“And now you die”) in a one-on-one match where no killing is supposed to happen.
 
Why does anyone like this guy again?

Well, the fact that Uraraka is constantly shouting right before each attack, thus making her presence known to Bakugo, certainly isn’t helping her.
 
Seriously, did you not learn anything from Sokka?  

 
Okay, Bakugo, that is the second time you’ve mentioned killing her. Dude, I know you have a bit of a Rambo complex. It’s not that serious, okay?

Wow, I hope someone puts that crapstain in his place.

Damn, the scene where Uraraka (Ochaco? IDK her full first name) is talking with her dad on the phone almost got to me.

You know that thing about how girls love bad boys? Yeah, there’s no ceiling on that.
 
Take out all sense from Pecha Berry(what I call her) and you’d be stuck with the nice but honestly dim girl who thinks boys like him can be ‘tamed’ by her kindness alone.
 
Also, give it up for Pecha, she tried very hard to beat the most Op guy in the class.

This. I feel like the point of the characterization is that all that bravado is largely empty.
 
The thing that I find weird about the criticisms of MHA’s characterizations is that one the main themes of the show is how heroes are not going to be what you think they are or should be. I think most people are aware of this idea (“Never meet your heroes.”) but this becomes unavoidable in a world where heroism is the norm. The show establishes this in the first or second ep with the reveal of All Might’s true form, and this carries through pretty much everyone in the cast.
 
So when I see people complain about a character in MHA not acting or looking the way they want them to, I’m just like… that’s the point?

I think you might be taking his “die” a little too seriously if you think he’s actually trying to kill people.
 
Also a lot of people ship him and Uraraka because of that scene since him and Aizawa were pretty much the only ones actually respecting her abilities as a fighter. Instead of thinking of her as a weakling.

No? I’ve seen more complaints about Neverland than OPM. (Maybe everyone I follow dropped S2?) But yeah, as Deathcloud said, he ain’t new.

Seriously how dense authors of these clickbait articles can be? He even include tweet showing Superalloy Darkshine (this is his official eng translation name not whatever author is harping on) in Madhouse season and still claim its new character introduced this season.

Hey, you know what was controversial? Ichigo. Lily. Holy shit, did people not like that. I saw those comments, first hand.
 
But those fans getting angry at those things are fine, right?
