True, but it remains popular even despite it. There are a ton of great animes that have incest in it but as soon as you mention it has incest, people think it’s crap. Why isn’t it the same for Game of Thrones?
@igotnopicks
Chivalry of a Failed Knight is also extremely well-written. However, if you mention the fact it has a sister who wants to fuck her brother, people automatically think it’s awful.

I think it’s because people see GoT and think “medieval times” and incest is expected. I haven’t watched it personally, but I would assume a lot of the incest is out of a desire to “keep the bloodline pure”.

With anime, people who aren’t anime fans (and even a number of people who are anime fans) often expect something cute and maybe a little cartoony. Incest in stories there is usually because Japan is such a conservative, straight-laced society, that breaking taboos (such as incest) are absolutely IRRESISTIBLE to the artists and story-writers. Incest doesn’t drive the story in most cases, it’s there because lots of people are turned on by incest.

I mean, MAYBE the incest in something like Game of Thrones is there because it turns people on, but it’s likely just there because of plot reasons.

The key is just learning when it’s worth challenging, and when it’s just something you go “yeah, that’s stupid”, brush it aside, and move on.

Yeah, I know. But the thing that sets me off aren’t normies and haters, but people in this thread and in these communities who should know better.

This isn’t just something that I just suddenly learned to hate, I’ve been holding my tongue for a while now. It’s just not how I like to engage media, and I’m tired of feeling like I’m wrong and people telling me I take anime too seriously. I’m so damn tired of it, man.

For the record, I have nothing against people falling in love with fictional characters. I honestly think it’s a perfectly normal part of the artistic experience. But so are story-telling and themes. Escapism and validation are a part of this, but so is being challenged, surprised, or disappointed. Can’t we talk about those, too?

It’s certainly not impossible to write a story about the complicated feelings one might have about being attracted to a relative, or the complications of being in an incestuous relationship. But to write one that’s earnest, believable, and sympathetic is going to be really hard. It’s not impossible, anything can work if it’s written and directed well enough. But that’s a tough task.

breaking taboos (such as incest) are absolutely IRRESISTIBLE to the artists and story-writers

Yup. But despite Japan’s reputation as an industry where nothing is sacred, this isn’t actually true. Publishers and producers have their own standards (along side actual censorship laws), so they’ll rarely let their creators actually do whatever the hell they want. Even if the creator wants to and has the skill to back it up, it’s rare for a story to actually take problematic ideas that far.

So there’s a lot of problematic stuff out there, but they’re often shallow explorations of those ideas.

And let’s be real, most people don’t care for stories about complicated relationships anyway.

Hyouka ep 17. The arc’s finale.

I appreciate the show showing the festival decorations being taken down. The show doesn’t just focus on the peaks of excitement and nostalgia, but also shows the buildup and the comedown, to make everything feel more real.

I liked Eru’s talk with Fuyumi. Eru’s straightforwardness might be her shortcoming, but it can also be her strength. She doesn’t need to be Fuyumi, Eru can just be her honest self, and I’m glad she realized that.

As expected, the resolution to the mystery wasn’t nearly as interesting as the buildup to it. Objectively, this was Hotaro’s best work yet. Subjectively, I didn’t really care. They spent a long time spelling it out and I found myself not really caring who the culprit was. There was one particularly brutal match cut, with Hotaro proudly declaring his name, and then it cut to Satoshi learning downwards, face in shadow, with no identity at all.

What a painful arc for Satoshi, man. For the first time all series, he tried. He really tried, but the world just didn’t care. That’s how it is sometimes.

Satoshi and Mayaka have such a weird, messy dynamic. They admire each other but think lowly of themselves, so when one compliments the other, it feels like they’re taking a shot. They get each other so effortlessly, but they don’t make it easy for other to love them. I wouldn’t say it’s cute, but it’s interesting.

Mayaka doesn’t have it much better, as she faces her troll on the bridge between buildings. (I’m sure that wasn’t the intended joke there, but I thought it was funny.) Kouchi goes for the classic “I was kidding,” intending for it to end the argument. But of course, trolling doesn’t actually remove your stake in the argument, it just hides it. It hides your emotions, from the truth of who you are and what you believe, from sincerity altogether. Sincerity is a weakness. It burns you again and again and again. But as Eru and Mayaka already know, sincerity is the only way forward.

Kouchi’s story echoes Fuyumi’s earlier speech about the struggle of this who sit on the sidelines. How are they supposed to feel when they’re trying their hardest, only to watch someone else take a casual swing at their passion and knock it out of the park on their first try? How can they take joy in that? And so Kouchi hides the masterpiece away, in furthest box in the closet, along with her feelings.

The reveal that Kouchi wrote Body Talk visibly hurt Mayaka, but I like to think there’s some comfort in that. Mayaka sees Kouchi’s talent as an impossible mountain to climb, but Kouchi has her own obstacles she can’t overcome. We all have someone we look up to, we all have our demons. It’s painful, but it’s the good kind of pain, one that I’m sure Mayaka can get her through and grow from.

And in the end, the Classics Club sells out their anthologies. It’s a small victory, but after all they’ve been through, it’s something.

So that was Hyouka’s fabled Festival Arc. All in all, really lives up to the hype. The themes, the character writing, the visual storytelling. I dunno if the show can top that, but that was a hell of a ride.

“My father is ambitious. He aimed for the top. He used his power to make a name for himself as a hero, but he was never able to best All Might, so the Symbol of Peace is living proof of his failure.”

Wow, the father issues, the heavy focus on honor and failure… Todoroki really is Zuko!

Also, watching the scene of Todoroki explaining about arranged “quirk marriages”… and instead of showing actual visuals of his parents, it just shows still frames of the other students getting lunch.

Yup, this is a low-budget anime alright.

I’m the one who used One-for-All… but I’m not the one who moved my fingers just now! It was like people I didn’t know came into my mind!

So, Todoroki is Zuko and Deku is Avatar Aang. Now everything makes sense.

Todoroki took a moment to melt his opponent from his ice prison. For some reason, in that moment he looked very sad to me.

…For some reason? Deku, did he not just explain to you his entire reason for fighting? The whole “abusive parents” thing? Doesn’t that ring a bell?

Anyway, I gotta admit, I’m liking season two a whole lot better than season one so far.
