That is what’s supposed to happen. I wouldn’t call that “masterclass,” that’s pretty basic. And I understand praising an anime for getting basic things right because so many don’t, but let’s reign it in a bit.
(My issue with it wasn’t even the comedy or the storytelling; it’s the characters and the premise. I couldn’t care.)
But this is what I mean. You always go right to the superlative. Okay, sure, you think Kaguya-sama is amazing, literally perfect in every way. But you also think WataTen is amazing. And KF S2. BGS, ZLS, LL, Cells, Alternative. All flawless masterpieces, right?
It’s one thing to be enthusiastic and optimistic about anime. I’m watching 13 shows this season, and I don’t do any hate-watching, so that’s 13 shows I like on some level (that’ll likely come down). But I don’t think they’re all S-class shows or potentially could be. I’m certainly not going to declare any of them all-timers three weeks into the season (didn’t we learn from
FranXX?). I don’t think my opinions or interpretations of anime have any actual weight (I write and post about them because I enjoy thinking about these things.) but I like to think that me saying I think
Endro and
KOTOBUKI could be great has more meaning because I don’t think every show I watch is great.
It’s not even that you like every show (there’s nothing wrong with that, honestly), it’s that you can’t acknowledge that they’re flawed in even the slightest ways. Like, I already know what you would say to my criticisms of LL; you’re going to say it’s cute, so it doesn’t matter what it does wrong. I don’t know if you’re even
willing think about any show objectively or critically. And that just doesn’t make for interesting discussion.
