Is it just me, or does it feel like between this and Discovery, the current runners of Star Trek want to do everything except make a good Star Trek show?

Like, everything with the Star Trek name since… honestly, the late 2000s… has this weird focus on more action and less philosophical debate, which feels distinctly un-Trek-like.

Probably because if they go back to the philosophical debate, I wouldn’t be surprised if many of the people watching would complain about them “shoving politics on TV shows where it doesn’t belong”…

I think Discovery cuts pretty close to the original series to be honest, maybe with a little more action. Honestly the last few episodes I’ve watched have been a classic case of ‘people talking philosophy at view screens for an hour’, with nary a phaser to be seen. I feel the second season has definitely been better than the first in this regard though, the balance has been much better and the characters have had more chance to flesh themselves out.

I feel the other Star Trek’s were a product of the 90’s, and that vein was pretty thoroughly mined over the hundreds of episodes they put out through that decade. The era of therapists and coffee shop politics. I’m not sure that really flies for audiences anymore, as shown by the collapse of the whole franchise.

…speaking of which, watching the Talos IV episodes of Discovery inspired me to watch ‘The Cage’, and it’s really good. I had never actually seen it before. Awesome villains, Susan Oliver is great as Vina, Spock is weirdly terrible and SHOUTS ALL HIS LINES, and the story is surprisingly clever and well thought out.

Regarding the latter Star VS the Forces of Evil episodes ||I gotta say,
It does feel odd to find out That in the end, Globgor, the one depicted out as deadly and evil monster, Turned out to be an actually sweet and nice guy. By how He was described in the past months I would have sweared he would have been the final boss of the show (in the end Will be the crazy maniac of Mina Loveberry to take the spot instead. Nobody say the coming…)

But hey, I prefer over 9000 of Times THIS kind of twist…. than the bullshit happened with Cassandra in the S2 finale of the Tangled series. That one was a stab in the heart for me… UGH. ||

Yeah… And the thing is, I’ve never found action one of Star Trek‘s strong suits, but I guess that’s what they’re focusing on now.

@SD50-2
Sadly, yeah.

Discovery never felt right to me. (Admittedly, the lack of species diversity among the cast and the downright terrible redesign of the Klingons didn’t help.)

In fairness, the CGI-animated TMNT 2012 show was surprisingly good, and a good balance of the classic cartoon’s humor, and the 2003 show & Mirage comics’ more serious/darker aspects combined.

@Broken Adam
I’m curious if snarky/self-aware humor is getting overdone in modern animation. Some shows do it better then others, but it’s almost like everything is trying to be a parody of itself.

@Thanotos Omega
I like AT, don’t get me wrong, but regardless of it’s surprisingly serious & darker moments, it’s still mostly a comedy show for the most part.

I feel it’s a holistic experience, dark when it needs to be but doesn’t feel the need to aimlessly wallow in it, also how long and slowly they are willing to do character arcs, i mean no other show has ever come close showing the change from Child to a full grown man like what they did with Finn,

Anyone know of cartoons that do this?

It doesn’t help when you have low confident individuals pretending that “self deprecating” Humor makes them any less pathetic and these people act like Meta humor in entertainment is some kind of masterpiece because being unapologetic about yourself is being a jackass apparantly

What I loved about She-Ra is how unapologetic it was for being silly and cheesy, and how uninterested it is in any deeper message or plot than “Cute, attractive people doing awesome, funny stuff”.

After a lot of shows that took themselves way too seriously or that seemed deeply self conscious about themselves, it was kind of refreshing.

The section of this generation that’s self-conscious and ignores when those people like things, anyway.

In regards to that, actually 2D movies like “Princess and the Frog,” “Curious George,” and even “The Simpsons Movie” were pretty well-received, but still not enough.

I hear part of the problem is 3D/CGI is actually cheaper/easier to do nowadays when it comes to a 90-minute feature film. (Heck, nowadays even fans can make their own SFM animations, and such now that the technology, and tools are easily available to the public.)
Instead of having people draw 2D pictures over, and over again, and painting numerous backgrounds from different “camera” angles, they can just use moveable 3D models, in 3D environments that can be viewed from multiple angles, or motion-capture outfits to make characters move.

Not undermining the work that goes into CGI, it can be beautiful, if done right, but compared to 2D animation, a li’l less work goes into it is all I’m saying. Thiis is also why even live-action movies heavily rely on CGI, instead of puppetry, or practical effects.

I kinda miss practical effects too actually… The puppet laughing Gremlings, or Slimer ghost hogging food looked more convincing to me, then say that flying pot-bellied alien Wato from SW, or the Scorpion King.
Let me stress, I don’t hate CGI/3D animation/effects, I feel it’s allowed anything to be possible in movies that can’t be done with practical effects. However, it just feels like it hasn’t progressed much sense the early 2000s, and still looks the same, and you can still easily tell what’s a CGI object/creature in a movie nowadays, and filmmakers rely on it too much.
Only on a few rare occasions, it’s impressive, like with Two-Face’s freaky half-burned face. I almost mistook some of it for make-up.

Meanwhile, almost every CGI animated movie either looks like Pixar, Disney, or Dreamworks’ style, with very few different styles between them, and even very similar meta-humor styles. (I’m glad the “Peanuts” movie tried to replicate the original simplistic Charles Shulz style & humor kinda, but in CGI, and had it’s own unique style too kinda.)

I mean in the time it’s taken Vizzie Pop to make a single 2d pilot for Hazbin Hotel, CGI groups have release numerous half hour long works, that shit is harder to do, so it fades away, especially once Tangled proved you could make it look good and age well with human leads,
