I remember seeing that movie a long time ago on either Cartoon Network or Disney Channel. I thought it was ok. Nowadays, the Nostalgia Critic is scaring people away from it.

Times like this I kinda dislike the NC, and similar popular online “critics.” I mean sure his reviews are satirical, and some programs he bashes deserve the mockery, and he’s not always meant to be taken too seriously, but the problem is, people do take his reviews, and remarks too seriously, and think even the decent stuff he bashes are genuinely bad, and just copy-and-paste his, and other internet “critics” as their own, and think just watching his videos are enough to legitimately judge something.
 
That said, some of his interpretations, and remarks are exaggerated, or even ignorant.  
Like he bashed the “Super Mario Bros. Super Show,” for not “having a backstory,” (even though Mario’s “Plumber’s log” intro narrations explain what’s going on) and because they called Bowser “King Koopa.” (Which is actually Bowser’s Japanese name, which some of the old merchandise used.) He didn’t seem to know much about the Mario series.  
He also kinda has double-standards, as he praised the Zelda cartoon from the SMBSS, even though frankly it was just as cheesey, (possibly even more) and he didn’t mention any of it’s flaws, not even Link’s goofy meme catchphrase. (At least, the Mario series is supposed to be a li’l silly.)

I dunno, I think MLP has plenty of depth, world-building, and such over the past 9 seasons. I’d say it took some risks too.
 
I’d say it’s taken risks too. Heck, I saw some viewers try to claim the “Twilight VS Tirek” scene from the Season 4 finale was “too intense for little girls.” (Bullcrap, my neice watches stuff like “Jurassic Park” sense she was 4 and doesn’t get scared.)

Understandable. While the movie did had its share of dumb moments, it didn’t look as godawful as the NC made it to be. It also doesn’t help that most NC episodes haven’t aged gracefully. (One of his jokes included that he thinks that Rover Dangerfield was really based on the Duck Hunt dog rather than Rodney Dangerfield.)
 
I wasn’t too turned off by his Super Mario Bros Super Show episode because well…DiC usually doesn’t have good quality control. I guess he was asking for a more concrete storyline to be told and since every episode was a movie/pop culture parody, it was hard to take it seriously.  
I think you need to watch his SMBSS episode again. He talked about the Zelda cartoon and teared it a new one as well. He even exploited Link’s catchphrase.

Would another Mortal Kombat cartoon work nowadays, since we have things like Netflix that are more relaxed about the stuff that can be shown in their shows?
 
Because Mortal Kombat is one of those things that only seems to work if it’s aimed at an adult audience.
 
Last time we got a kid-friendly Mortal Kombat, we got Defender of the Realm, and that…

Mortal Kombat ain’t a Japanese property, so they’re irrelevant.  
Thing is, there’s really not a whole lot that MK has going for it in terms of aesthetic style that could benefit from any particular style of animation, so anything you could make for it will probably wind up looking bland and indistinct like Young Justice or something. May as well do it in live-action or motion-capture.

So how will Adult Swim do with this change after their contract for the older seasons of Family Guy and Bob’s Burgers expires?

I think Adult swim might be fine with Rick and Morty. But…

No, he did poke fun at the Zelda cartoon in that review as well.

Adult Swim has no problem making original content, especially considering the chicken-feed budget that stuff like Aqua Teen had. They can certainly make do with a couple less “imports”.

I don’t remember him mocking the Zelda toon, but that might’ve been a different ep’. I’m not a huge NC fan who keeps track. Actually, you, and he are wrong that every SMBSS ep’ was only pop-culture parody episodes, some episodes were more basic, and took place in the Mushroom Kingdom, and such. Like “The Great BMX Race,” “The Bird, the Bird,” and such. But yeah, it would’ve been better if it had more of those. I think that’s why some prefer the “Adventures of SMB3” cartoon spinoff.  
Despite DiC’s varying quality, they still made enjoyable shows. (And frankly, there are much worse game adaptations.)  
As for the NC, his criticism/bashing about the SMBSS wasn’t what bothered me as much as how wrong some of his facts were, he seemed to have his facts wrong about the Mario series in general. (Like not knowing Bowser is known as “Koopa” in Japan, and some old merchandise as a result.)
 
Sometimes his criticisms seem either unfair, or ignorant in some of his videos. When I watched his “Black Cauldron” review, he bitched about the character Gergie so much, I started to find the NC’s shrill whining voice, and edgelord behavior way more annoying then that character ever was. (Frankly, I was never bothered by Gergie.)  
While the point to his series is to help show nostalgia isn’t always perfect, not everything in our childhood was “great,” and that’s good, but still sometimes he goes overboard, and gives perfectly decent shows/movies a bad reputation with his fans who take his reviews too seriously. It’s also kinda ironic when he bashes stuff like Adam Sandler for his goofy movie personas, when his NC persona is actually quite shrill, edgy, whiney, and such at times too. (That said, I think Sandler gets picked on too much anyway.)
 
I still like some stuff he bashes, but to be fair, sometimes the NC gives overlooked stuff some love, and positivity, like “Return to Oz,” a great nightmare-fuel Disney movie.

To be fair about ‘Black Cauldron’ and the character of Gurgi, some of us who grew up reading the original Chronicles of Prydain were bugged by him too. He was originally both much more noble and possessed more pathos in the books. It’d be hard to get all that in an adaptation but it still rankled.

Regardless, the movie wasn’t that bad, and was quite dark for a Disney movie at the time. Interestingly, it had some rather gruesome violent scenes cut out (cel images can be found online) that looked almost Rated-R levels of violent. (Or at least by 1980s standards.)

Yes. The movie itself was a decent piece of work. The problem for me was I went in expecting something a lot more like the book when I should have known better.
 
And while I like the original Warrior!Horned King, the version in the movie was great.

Cartoon Network will lose the rights to Family Guy in 2021.
