there are almost 30 pages of solo anthros that are tagged ‘pony’

How bout some of these measures? Yes I’m aware some contradict each other. I said some.

reflag the current “pony” to a bodyplan tag
rename the existing “pony” tag to “pony (bodyplan)”
create an actual bodyplan tag for non-anthro, non-semi-anthro animals
create new tag “pony (species)” and make it an alias for “equine”
create new tag “pony (anthro species)”
idk, automatic 30 min instaban for anyone who uploads the combo “anthro, pony, solo” with a special re-education ban screen

This is definitely an issue, and one that’s been discussed among staff.

I’m not clear on the specifics (I wasn’t on staff at the time), but last year for a brief time, the “pony” tag was changed from a species to a body type tag as a first step of a broader plan that included a “feral” tag. I think it was a mix between your first, third, and fourth suggestions. There’s a little bit of discussion on that move here and here, and there was more on Discord. The main staff member behind the move is no longer involved with the site, so I don’t know if this is still being considered in any capacity. Personally, I think it seemed like a good idea overall, though I’m apprehensive about the term “feral”.

An oddity with the current tagging system is that “pony” kind of doubles as both a species and body type tag. Something like “griffon, anthro, solo” or “earth pony, anthro, solo” is correct, but not “pony, anthro, solo”.

I could wipe the “pony” tag from all of those images you linked pretty easily. I just wouldn’t want to do that now only to reverse it later.

bc it directly contradicts the explicitly stated scope of the tag pony. It was always intended to be a bodyplan tag and to facilitate searching for stuff that’s actual ponies and not anthro, semi-anthro, eqg, human, taur, lamia, etc.

I’m actually going to move pony back to species as the category change is just causing confusion right now. We can have a proper cleanup later and whatever we do with that should get its own thread because I’m going to need a lot of hands for it.

Do note that pony is still used under the old definition, which is for the 4-legged show style ponies. Nothing was actually changing in the definition today, it was just to reinforce the definition that was already in place.

I just linked close to 30 pages of search results proving it is in fact far from “perfect”. Obviously it’s unclear because people keep using it wrong. Considering all the needless tagging work it’s causing, its shortness may be concise but vague.

Or do you specifically mean that producing a search result mixing non-anthro ponies and equine anthros, as if it were a true species tag, is “perfect”? Because in that case, the tag’s description must be changed to allow semi-anthro and anthro. You’d also have to decide whether non-pony horses (whether zoomorphic or anthro) would be “pony”. And if not, you’d have to establish where the line between pony and non-pony equines goes. A massive load of currently correctly tagged anthro and semi-anthro images would need to be tagged. Etc etc. There is no “change nothing” option for a tag like this at a point like this, unless we welcome the existence of a frankly useless tag to be massively used on the site.

All of the widely-used tags on Derpibooru are usable at the very least. That being said, even though tags like “pony” (sort of) work, we should strive to have as few tags as possible with multiple meanings or unintuitive rules for use. We could always get rid of the “anthro” tag on those images and state more clearly that quadrupedal ponies are the “default” and thus don’t need their own tag. This assumption exists behind a lot of tagging on this site, and it’s not always a bad thing. In contrast, while having an extra body type tag on “feral” characters would be a bit more work for uploaders (and a lot more work for staff to retag), it would be a more consistent tagging scheme and would be useful for people who want to omit anthro, human, etc. from their searches.

Also, “zoomorphic” would be a great name for a body type tag for non-anthros. My apprehension with “feral” to mean non-anthro is that it’s a furry term that could lead to confusion and controversy.
